Eigenaar van Lola zet moderne windtunnel te koop

De hypermoderne windtunnel van Lola staat te koop. Lola Group-eigenaar Martin Birrane heeft zijn aandacht verlegd naar het circuit van Mondello Park in Ierland en andere zakelijke activiteiten. Hij is niet meer in de wereld der engineering actief en heeft daarom de windtunnel te koop gezet.

Birrane nam de Lola Group in 1997 over en investeerde fors om het bedrijf van de ondergang te redden. Onderdeel van die investeringen vormde de bouw van een state-of-the-art windtunnel in 1998. Daarin zijn de Lola-auto's voor de Champ Car, de Le Mans-prototypes en de A1 Grand Prix-bolides ontwikkeld, maar ook Formule 1-teams maakten veelvuldig gebruik van de faciliteiten.

De windtunnel krijgt nu een andere eigenaar. Birrane legt uit: "Ik heb een lange en succesvolle reis in de productie en technologie van raceauto's afgelegd. Het is voor mij belangrijk dat het erfgoed van Lola blijft bestaan en blijft bijdragen aan Groot-Brittannië als globale leider in deze sector. Ik ben extreem blij met hetgeen onze hypermoderne windtunnel voor ons betekend heeft."

"Het heeft zijn nut gediend voor enkele meest geavanceerde bedrijven ter wereld op technologisch vlak, van autosport tot ruimtevaart, defensie en de automobielsector. Het is een succesvolle en levensvatbare zelfstandige business en daardoor voor elke potentiële koper een aanwinst. Het is het begin van een nieuw hoofdstuk, maar ik wil er wel voor zorgen dat de windtunnel in de juiste handen valt."

  Daar heb je niet zo'n tunnel voor nodig. Die heb je al naar een avondje stappen met een goeie kebab aan het einde de volgende dag onder je deken... Daar kan geen ventilator tegenop...

De dag dat... Lola de laatste keer in F1 in actie kwam
is nu 20 jaar geleden. De fabrikant heeft 5 of 6 keer haar rentree gemaakt, en het ging altijd van kwaad tot erger. De laatste keer viel Riccardo Rosset buiten de 107% regeling, zelfs buiten de 114% regeling.

  Hoe oud is het gemiddelde vliegtuig binnen Europa? Grote machines worden veel langer ingezet als bijvoorbeeld een auto. De windtunnel aanzich is 20 jaar oud, alleen zal in de loop der jaren wel flinke updates hebben gehad. Kan mij niet voorstellen dat ze data inladen middels een floppie.
