Force India betaalt letterlijk de prijs voor succes

Het team van Force India heeft dit seizoen opnieuw een uitzonderlijke prestatie neergezet. De historische vierde plaats bij de constructeurs uit 2016 werd dit jaar doodleuk herhaald. Force India-directeur Otmar Szafnauer tegenover Reuters: "Volgend jaar gaan we voor een hattrick aan vierde plekken."

Dan moet de Indiase renstal wel teams als McLaren, Williams en Renault achter zich zien te houden. McLaren is van oudsher een topteam, het fabrieksteam van Renault is in opkomst en Williams beschikt net als Force India over de machtige Mercedes-motoren. Al dolf Williams dit seizoen wel duidelijk het onderspit ten opzichte van Force India.

Szafnauer: "We zijn klaar voor de uitdaging om onze positie volgend jaar weer te consolideren. Mercedes verricht geweldig werk voor ons. Maar als je naar Williams kijkt, zij rijden met dezelfde motoren, maar zij kunnen niet aan onze prestaties tippen. Het is dus niet alleen de motor die ons zo sterk maakt. We huren graag mensen met dezelfde instelling in; racers die er alles aan doen om het werk voor elkaar te krijgen en wars zijn van politiek."

Door de prima prestaties is Force India wel in een aparte situatie terechtgekomen. Elk extra punt kost immers 5.161 dollar extra aan inschrijfgeld voor 2018. Aangezien er niks meer te winnen valt, betaalt het team nu letterlijk de prijs voor succes. "Elk punt dat we nu nog pakken helpt ons niet in het kampioenschap, maar kost ons wel meer dan 5.000 dollar aan inschrijfgeld. Dat kunnen we ons niet veroorloven", aldus Szafnauer. Om eraan toe te voegen: "Dat laatste is een geintje natuurlijk."

Alleen een podiumplek zou nog de moeite waard zijn voor Force India dit jaar. Als ze echter niet op podiumkoers rijden, dan gewoon Ocon en Perez één ronde voor het einde naar binnen halen.

  Misschien wil Renault wel een smak smeergeld betalen om 6e te worden in het WCC, en laten de FI coureurs zich in de laatste ronde met "problemen" terugzakken tot achter Hulk en Sainz ;)
