'Jack Aitken in beeld voor functie van reserve bij Renault'

Dat Sergey Sirotkin volgende week voor Williams gaat testen is een aanwijzing dat de Rus zijn langste tijd bij het team van Renault heeft gehad. Hij vertolkte dit jaar de rol van reserverijder bij de Franse renstal. Voor die functie komt nu Renault Academy-lid Jack Aitken in aanmerking.

Dat schrijft Joe Saward op zijn blog. Aitken is momenteel actief in de GP3, waarin hij op vijftig punten achterstand van kampioen George Russell op een tweede plaats staat. De verwachting is dat de 22-jarige Brit met Koreaanse achtergrond voor 2018 doorschuift naar de Formule 2.

In combinatie met de positie van reserve bij het Formule 1-team van Renault dus. Sirotkin staat al sinds eind 2016 stil en moet volgend jaar weer ergens racen om niet helemaal uit beeld te raken. Hij hoopt tijdens de bandentest in Abu Dhabi de teamleiding van Williams op andere gedachten te brengen.

Bij Williams neigt men namelijk naar een contract voor Robert Kubica. Sirotkin heeft echter een beter gevulde sponsorbuidel. De Rus weet zich gesteund door SMP Racing, het autosport-project van het financiële instituut SMP van de broers Boris en Arkady Rotenberg.
