Betrouwbaarheid en pitstops deden Renault de das om

Het team van Renault had dit jaar als vijfde in het kampioenschap voor constructeurs kunnen eindigen. Daar is men bij de Franse renstal heilig van overtuigd. Zondag steeg er een groot gejuich op uit de pitbox van Renault toen Nico Hülkenberg in Abu Dhabi als zesde over de meet kwam. Dat betekende namelijk de zesde plaats voor het team uit Enstone.

Hülkenberg was een beetje verbaasd door de vreugde. "Ik deed gewoon mijn werk", vernam Auto Motor und Sport van de Duitser. Renault-engineer Alan Permane is minder ingetogen. "We hadden de vijfde plek kunnen bemachtigen als we onszelf niet zo vaak in de weg hadden gezeten dit seizoen. Nico had in Singapore als vierde kunnen finishen, ware het niet voor een olielek. Alleen met dat resultaat hadden we al veel dichter bij Williams gestaan, dat had het makkelijker gemaakt."

Uiteindelijk kwam Renault 26 punten tekort op Williams. Vooral een gebrek aan betrouwbaarheid en de zwakke pitstops braken de Franse renstal dit seizoen op. Renault kende dit jaar twaalf uitvalbeurten en in het klassement van de DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award voor de beste pitcrew speelde het team geen rol. Slechts vier keer legde Renault qua pitstops beslag op een positie bij de beste tien.

In Abu Dhabi kwamen beide problemen samen in de pitstop van Carlos Sainz. De monteur van het linker voorwiel dacht het wiel correct bevestigd te hebben, maar ging vlak na de stop toch twijfelen. Toen was het al te laat. Het wiel rolde van de wagen van Sainz, die daardoor uitviel. De wielmoer raakte daarbij zoek. Drie uur na de race was de moer nog niet gevonden. Permane: "Alleen door de moer te vinden kunnen we uitvogelen wat er precies mis is gegaan."

Over de snelheid had Renault in de tweede seizoenshelft niets te klagen. Permane: "Gemiddeld hadden we de op drie na snelste auto." Renault-directeur Cyril Abiteboul voegde toe: "In elk geval op banen waar maximale downforce vereist was. Wielmoeren zijn geen hogere wiskunde. Dat aspect zullen we verbeteren, evenals de betrouwbaarheid. Ons team heeft met de aerodynamica aangetoond dat we problemen op kunnen lossen."

Klopt. Wanneer er een coureur vergelijkbaar als Hulkenberg had gepresteerd in de Renault waren ze waarschijnlijk 5e geworden.

Enigzins off topic - had Sainz nou niet door dat zijn wiel los zat? Ik vond hem nogal lang door gaan met alle gerommel van dien.

  Vlak voor het tunneltje in de pitstraat zag je z'n voorwiel gaan wiebelen, SAI had toen de keuze of direct stoppen en daarmee de pitstraat blokkeren of proberen z'n auto naar een 'veilige' plaats te manoeuvreren. Naar mijn mening heeft hij een juiste keuze gemaakt...

  @ nino, als STR twee redelijke coureurs had gehad voor de laatste 5 of 6 races i.p.v. 2 rookies, dan had Renault never nooit de 6de plaats bereikt.
