Niki Lauda dient in elk geval contract tot en met 2020 uit

Niki Lauda blijft sowieso tot en met 2020 werkzaam in de Formule 1. De Oostenrijker heeft bij Mercedes een contract dat nog drie jaar doorloopt. Wat daarna gebeurt, is vooralsnog toekomstmuziek. De drievoudig wereldkampioen is immers ook al 68 jaar.

Op de vraag van Bild am Sonntag of hij zichzelf ooit met pensioen ziet gaan, antwoordde Lauda: "Ja, natuurlijk. Mijn contract bij Mercedes loopt tot eind 2020, dat dien ik hoe dan ook uit. Daarna zal ik de situatie bekijken. Het is veel te vroeg om daar al over te praten. Ik woon elke race bij en ik heb verder geen andere verplichtingen. Ik sta 100 procent in dienst van Mercedes."

Zijn familie met twee jonge kinderen vormt in elk geval geen belemmering om langer door te gaan in de Formule 1. "Mijn vrouw en kinderen zien me net zo vaak als altijd. Er zijn maar 21 weekenden in het jaar dat ik weg ben. De rest van de weekenden breng ik thuis door als een echte familieman. Mijn familie heeft geen problemen met mijn schema", aldus Lauda.

    Niki Lauda is goud waar voor Mercedes. Een meester in het sluiten van deals, een man die mensen voor zich kan winnen, hij heeft een enorm netwerk, zeer resultaatgericht en to-the-point. Geen betere teamadviseur dan Niki Lauda.

    Lauda, met zijn prestaties, ervaring en statuur, heeft nog zeker waarde voor Mercedes, denk aan:
    - Het conflict Rosberg/Hamilton na Barcelona 2016
    - Hamilton was enthousiast over gewijzigde teambesprekingen (met engineers) wat het afvinken van een standaardlijstje leek geworden. Lauda veranderde het format en volgorde waardoor er meer uit de meetings werd gehaald.

      Wat heeft Lauda veranderd dan? Onderaan begonnen met afvinken?

      Ik neem aan dat het afvinken noodzakelijk was/is. Zal dus nu ook nog wel gebeuren.

      Door volgorde en manier van dingen ter sprake brengen te veranderen, ga je ook anders denken. Daarmee kom je soms tot creatievere inzichten. Lewis vond het in ieder geval een vooruitgang.

    Er is een coureur waarvan ook zijn contract afloopt na 2020. En de kans is groot dat hij in 2021 voor Mercedes rijdt. Wedden dat Niki blijft? Dat wil hij niet missen.
