Charles Leclerc: "Startnummer 16 zeker niet mijn eerste keuze"

Al maanden gingen de geruchten, maar vorige week zaterdag werd eindelijk bevestigd dat Charles Leclerc zijn Formule 1-debuut gaat maken in 2018. De Monegask, die het afgelopen seizoen het hele Formule 2-veld oprolde, tekende een contract bij het team van Alfa Romeo Sauber. Leclerc heeft nummer 16 gekozen als permanent startnummer, maar laat weten dat het niet zijn eerste keuze was.

"Het klopt dat ik wel even heb moeten zoeken naar een geliefd startnummer. Ik wilde eerst nummer 7, maar die is natuurlijk al aan Kimi Raikkonen toegewezen. Daarna heb ik nummer 10 lang in gedachten gehad, maar toen Pierre Gasly zijn debuut maakte was ik dat nummer ook kwijt. Uiteindelijk heb ik mijn derde keuze, nummer 16 ingebracht. Ik ben jarig op 16 oktober, dus dat leek mij de meest logische keuze", aldus Charles Leclerc.

Leclerc krijgt volgend jaar gezelschap van Marcus Ericsson bij Alfa Romeo Sauber. Ericsson kon zijn contract verlengen door de invloeden van zijn sponsoren binnen het team.

Ik ben wel voorstander, ik zie de logica niet in van elk jaar andere startnummers.. het maakt het onoverzichtelijk, vooral voor de nieuwe fans die het al onoverzichtelijk vinden wanneer iemand 35 of 40 plekken straf krijgt na een motorwissel..

      Nog 1 dingetje dan: belachelijk dat het startveld geen nr 1 heeft. Ik vind dat ook leken te allen tijden moeten weten op welke plek de wereldkampioen rijdt.

    Ik ben geen fan van permanente nummers. Vond wisselende nummers leuker. Ik hoop trouwens dat als Max kampioen wordt hij het volgende jaar met nummer 1 rijdt. Zoals een echte kampioen.

      Ik ben juist wel voor vaste nummers. Dat zorgt voor herkenbaarheid, net als helmdesigns zouden die ook een carrièrelang mee moeten gaan.

      Nummers als dat van Valentino Rossi, Marquez en noem maar op zijn nu al legendarisch.
      Helmdesigns als van Fittipaldi, Hunt, Senna, Piquet, etc. hebben historrische waarde.

      Na een titel met nummer 1 rijden is prima, maar daarna weer terug naar het vaste nummer graag, in Max’ geval dus 33.

      Bij RBR wordt ze dat marketingtechnisch waarschijnlijk al aangeraden. Dan wil iedereen weer een nieuw petje of modelautootje of weet ik het wat hebben. Maar ik denk sowieso dat Max voor 1 zou gaan

      Volgens mij ben jij voor herkenbaarheid Larry. Ben ik ook, en als vaste startnummers daaraan bijdragen, prima. Maar nog belangrijker vind ik dat zij voldoende groot zijn, contrasterend met de rest en op vaste plekken zodat het geen zoekplaatje wordt. En voor nr 1 moet een uitzondering worden gemaakt. Vroeger was dat iets dat je met trots droeg, maar dat lijkt nu vervangen door image; ieder probeert een eigen merknaam voor zichzelf te creëren.

    Over Jules Biacnchi. Aan het begin van het seizoen 2017 hing er in de lucht dat Ferrari in de naamvoering van haar 2017-bolide misschien een eerbetoon aan Bianchi zou opnemen.

    Marchionne kwam daar later in de media op terug met de mededeling dat men op een andere manier een tastbare herinnering aan Jules zouden creëren. Nooit meer iets over gelezen of gehoord. Iemand wel?

    NB. Naar anderen (bijvoorbeeld Gilles Villeneuve) zijn straten rondom Maranello vernoemd.
