Lewis Hamilton ziet Grand Prix van Hongarije als keerpunt

Terugblikkend op het afgelopen seizoen zegt Lewis Hamilton dat Grand Prix van Hongarije een geweldig moment voor Mercedes was en ook een keerpunt voor zijn persoonlijke motivatie.

Tijdens die Grand Prix liet Valtteri Bottas Hamilton voorbij gaan om zo een aanval te kunnen doen op de Ferrari's. Het lukte Hamilton echter niet en op het laatste moment geeft hij de podiumplaats weer terug en mist zo twee kostbare punten in de strijd om de wereldtitel.

"Dat mocht nooit meer gebeuren"

Tijdens het FIA Prize Giving-gala vertelt hij hoe dit zijn tweede seizoenshelft heeft beïnvloed. Hamilton: "Ik ging de zomerstop in met het gevoel dat ik nooit meer in die positie terecht mocht komen en ook het team niet in de positie meer mocht brengen wie eerste en tweede is. Bij mijzelf dacht ik 'vanaf nu moet ik ieder moment voorop liggen en mag er nooit meer een discussie zijn of Valtteri Lewis voorbij moet laten'."

Hele andere vibe

Over de voorbereiding op de tweede helft van het jaar zegt hij: "Ik heb alles wat ik in de eerste helft had gedaan bestudeerd en alle leermomenten daaruit in de tweede helft toegepast." Ook was de strijd met Ferrari een extra motivatie voor het hele team en vergelijkt dat met vorig jaar. "Het was een veel leukere strijd. Als je het op moet nemen tegen een ander team is de energie binnen het zo verschillend," aldus de Mercedes-coureur. "Het is een verschil met voorgaande jaren toen het tussen de twee coureurs ging. Het maakte binnen het team niet echt uit wie er zou winnen en dat geeft een hele andere vibe. Nu waren allen krachten verenigd en op één doel gericht."

Lewis zette na de zomerstop duidelijk nog een tandje bij om Bottas en Vettel af te schudden in de titelstrijd.

Slightly off-topic: van de week wist niemand waar Hamilton die 2x was ingehaald (op Maleisië na): ik denk dat de 2e Bottas in Hongarije in de laatste bocht was. Ook al liet hij hem voorbij, zal dat in de statistieken als een inhaalactie gelden

  De officiële statistieke zeggen dat Lewis 1x is ingehaald. Hier hebben ze er eentje bij verzonnen om het artikel over Max te laten gaan.
  
  Max is trouwens vaker dan 2x ingehaald dus die statistieken kloppen sowieso niet.
  In USA 1x door Hamilton
  In Brazilië 1x door Hamilton
  in China 1x door Vettel
  Dus al minimaal 3x.

Mijns inziens kun je het beter over een ommekeer hebben...

  Hahahaha, Ja kijk maar naar zijn broer en vader. No way dat hij zo'n bos kan hebben. Misschien iets voor Max en Vettel om op een pers bijeenkomst met zijn 3en om daar steken te gaan uitdelen. Hammi is inmiddels ook al bezig om Vettel te kleineren en Max te negeren. Ik zeg: terug pakken die gast.
