Vandoorne: "Singapore en Maleisië waren mijn beste races"

Stoffel Vandoorne heeft een moeilijk eerste volledige seizoen in de Formule 1 achter de rug. De Belg kwam bij McLaren niet bepaald in een gespreid bedje terecht. De Honda-motor schoot dit jaar weer tekort met zowel de betrouwbaarheid als het vermogen. Naarmate het seizoen vorderde, ging Vandoorne steeds beter in zijn vel steken, maar het begin was moeizaam.

"Het dieptepunt was Bahrein, waar ik in de opwarmronde stuitte op motorische problemen en niet eens deel kon nemen aan de race", steekt de GP2-kampioen van 2015 van wal. "Natuurlijk is dat niet wat je wil nadat je in het weekend hard toegewerkt en toegeleefd hebt naar de race. Dat ik in de tests niet veel kilometers af heb kunnen leggen maakte het wel moeilijker, vooral bij het opbouwen van een relatie met het team en de engineers."

Hij moest even door de zure appel heen bijten, maar Vandoorne kreeg de Formule 1 langzaam maar zeker beter onder de knie. "Ik voelde me aan het einde van het seizoen veel beter dan aan het begin van het jaar. Singapore en Maleisië waren twee van mijn beste races ooit. Beide keren finishte ik als zevende en scoorde ik belangrijke punten. Er waren meer positieve races waarin een sterk optreden niet tot uiting kwam in het resultaat, vooral als gevolg van onze grid penalty's."

Vandoorne heeft nu het gevoel dat hij het team in de juiste richting kan sturen. "Het werk in de fabriek en in de simulator verloopt nu soepeler, ook op het aerodynamische vlak. Ik heb meer inbreng en kan de auto beter naar mijn wensen afstellen. Ik ben tevreden met hoe de dingen nu gaan."

Weet niet of je “saai” naast of op de baan bedoelt @Maximo? Naast de baan is m.i. onbelangrijk en op de baan hebben we hem maar weinig in beeld gezen. Deels door de uitvallers en deels door de tv-registratie.

Beter hem in 2018 na een serie van zes races zonder pech pas te beoordelen.

Een pak minder gridstraffen voor volgend seizoen gaat hem vooruit helpen.
Het team heeft eindelijk door dat Stoffel echt vastberaden is.
Renault kent hem nog van de beginperiode.
De rest is afwachten.

  Helaas, dan kom je met een zogezegde eigen mening om af te sluiten weet je perfect wat de Britten willen.
  Een deftige rede lees ik niet.
  
  Het zou beter zijn als je eens een mening hebt over het punt waar de topic over gaat.
