Formule 1 rommelt met cijfers bezoekersaantallen

Liberty Media verstuurde eerder deze maand met veel trots een persbericht over de bezoekersaantallen in 2017. De Grands Prix trokken dit jaar bij elkaar opgeteld 8 procent meer bezoekers. Liberty heeft de cijfers nu alleen moeten herzien, omdat het persbericht bol stond van de foute en onjuiste gegevens. Dat schrijft Christian Sylt namens de BBC.

Bij achttien van de twintig races stond een verkeerd percentage in de vergelijking tussen dit seizoen en vorig jaar. Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media wijt dat aan een 'systematische fout'. De cijfers rondom de Grand Prix van Azerbeidzjan riepen de meeste vragen op. Liberty Media maakte melding van een stijging van 58 procent ten opzichte van de 30.000 bezoekers uit 2016.

Het raceweekend in Bakoe werd volgens de organisatie echter bijgewoond door 71.451 toeschouwers. Dat zou een stijging van 138,2 procent betekenen, ware het niet dat de promotor in Azerbeidzjan zelf over een stijging van 30 procent spreekt. Dat zou het bezoekersaantal uit 2016 op 55.032 brengen. Of de Formule 1 heeft met de cijfers gesjoemeld, of Bakoe.

Iets klopt er in elk geval niet. Het heeft er alle schijn van dat de cijfers beter weergegeven zijn dan ze in werkelijkheid waren. Sylt heeft aan de hand van de data van de promotors zelf ook een optelsom gemaakt en hij komt op een stijging van 4,4 procent voor de bezoekersaantallen in 2017 ten opzichte van 2016. Dat is dus bijna de helft minder dan wat Liberty Media de wereld heeft willen doen geloven.

capitalisten kunnen goed lucht bubbels maken, en met die data meer sponsorgeld aftroggelen lol doe net als china laat paar bussen schoolkinderen de tribunes vullen, dan is het tenminste nog echt :)

Mmm, niet zo slim van een beursgenoteerde onderneming om zo opzichtig met de cijfers te sjoemelen. En het aandeel stond toch al onder druk...

Laten we het erop houden dat de dalende trend die al jaren onder blaaskaak Ecclestone gaande was tot staan is gebracht. Dan zit je altijd goed.
