Pierre Gasly: "Hopelijk kunnen we voor verrassing zorgen"

Een rookie is hij niet meer, maar toch zal het seizoen 2018 het eerste volledige seizoen worden voor Pierre Gasly in de Formule 1. De Fransman debuteerde in Maleisië in de Toro Rosso en zal vanaf volgend jaar met een Honda-motor rijden. Gasly hoopt voor een verrassing te kunnen zorgen.

Wat Honda in 2018 kan is nog onzeker, maar gezien de progressie die de Japanners boekten in de tweede seizoenshelft met McLaren mag wel een en ander verwacht worden. Gasly blijft echter voorzichtig: "Natuurlijk weet Honda wel hoe ze een motor moeten bouwen, ondanks dat de eerste drie jaren sinds hun terugkeer in de Formule 1 niet de meest succesvolle waren. Ik heb er echter vertrouwen in dat ze het tij weten te keren, het scheelt bovendien dat ze zich volledig op ons kunnen focussen. Ik hoop dat we volgend jaar voor wat verrassingen kunnen zorgen."

      Juist Dutch, laten we maar even afwachten. Ik kan je verzekeren dat wij straks met onze ogen staan te knipperen, want er staat iets te gebeuren. Als er iets is waar een Japanner een broertje aan dood heeft, is het wel gezichtsverlies. En gezichtsverlies hebben ze al te veel geleden, de laatste jaren. Die Japanners zullen niet rusten voor ze hun gram gehaald hebben, neem dat maar van mij aan. Ze hebben nu de kans om een nieuwe start te maken en daar gaan ze koste wat kost een succes van maken, daar ben ik 100% van overtuigd.

    Ik ga er vanuit dat Red Bull ruim 20 man naar Japan heeft gevlogen om het team daar aan te vullen. Eigenlijk heeft Red Bull nu de touwtjes in handen qua sturing voor ontwikkeling, iets dat ze jaren niet voor elkaar kregen met die trotse Fransen daar bij Renault. Ergens hoop ik dat er een kanon uit de winter voort komt. Maar ik blijf wel realistisch en wacht eerst t aantal technische storingen in de tests af.

      Ik denk dat er ook wel een Honda blokkie op de testbank van Red Bull staat te draaien, die gaan echt wel stappen zetten de komende tijd,

    Dat hoop ik ook voor Gasly, Toro Rosso én Red Bull Racing.

    Voor Pierre is het ook zaak Brendon Hartley goed partij te geven wil hij ook na 2018 nog van de Honda-motorwillen genieten. Dat wordt nog een interessant duel mochten ze niet om en om steeds uitvallen... Ik hou alle opties open.
