Voormalig Formule 1-coureur Jacques Swaters is overleden. De Belg heeft de mooie leeftijd van 84 jaar bereikt. Swaters nam gedurende zijn carriére deel aan in totaal zeven Formule 1-races.

Swaters werd in 1926 geboren in Brussel en begon zijn carriére in de autosport in 1948. Hij reed dat jaar in de 24 uur van Spa-Francorchamps met Paul Frere in een MG. Drie jaar later maakte Swaters zijn Formule 1-debuut tijdens de Grand Prix van Duitsland op de Nordschleife. Hij verving daarbij Andre Pillete bij Ecurie Belgique, een team wat mede door Swaters zelf is opgericht.

Daarna nam Swaters nog aan zes andere Grands Prix deel en scoorde in 1953 zjin beste resultaat in de Formule 1, tijdens de Duitse Grand Prix. De Belg eindigde daarin als zevende. Swaters was succesvoller in de sportscars, waarmee hij in 1954 vierde werd in Le Mans en derde in Reims met een Jaguar.

Daarna besloot Swaters zich volledig te richten op de endurace racing en eindigde de 24 uur van Le Mans in 1955 als derde. Verder richtte de Belg het beroemde Ecurie Francorchams-team op en was goed bevriend met Enzo Ferrari.
