Nicholas Latifi dit jaar reservecoureur bij Force India

Nicholas Latifi vertolkt in 2018 de rol van test- en reserverijder van het team van Force India. De 22-jarige Canadees zal in de young driver-testsessies ingezet worden en hij mag ook een aantal vrijdagtrainingen voor zijn rekening nemen. De afgelopen twee seizoenen was Latifi als testcoureur aan het team van Renault verbonden.

Dat combineerde hij met racen in de Formule 2. Latifi: "Ik ben opgewonden over deze mogelijkheid. Force India heeft de voorbije jaren een constant stijgende lijn tentoongespreid en het doet me deugd om onderdeel uit te gaan maken van een van de succesverhalen van de Formule 1. Ik sta te popelen om het team te laten zien wat ik in mijn mars heb en om ze te helpen het gat naar de voorhoede van de grid verder te verkleinen."

Force India-teambaas Vijay Mallya: "Nicholas voegt zich bij ons na een sterk seizoen in de Formule 2 en versterkt ons opleidingsprogramma. Hij komt ter ondersteuning van ons simulatorprogramma en zal ook een paar keer tijdens een vrije training in actie komen. We hebben een eer hoog te houden met jonge coureurs die we aan de Formule 1 laten proeven. Nicholas zal opgenomen worden in onze organisatie en enorm veel leren ter voorbereiding op zijn volgende stap."

Dit is wel verrassend nieuws, want de verwachting was dat Lucas Auer en George Russell de functie van officiële reserve van Force India samen zouden gaan bekleden dit jaar. Auer testte vorig jaar in Hongarije al voor het team, terwijl Russell onderdeel uitmaakt van het opleidingstraject van motorenpartner Mercedes en in Brazilië en Abu Dhabi al voor de Indiase renstal aan de start van de eerste vrije training verscheen. De keuze is nu echter op Latifi gevallen.

Dus hij gaat op voor zijn 3e seizoen als testcoureur!? Wauw... wat een mega talent en waardevolle aanvulling voor een team. Hij zal wel een flink sponsorbudget hebben.

  Renault neem afscheid van de coureurs die geld mee brengen (Palmer, Sirotkin en deze Latifi) en gaan voor echte talenten. Slim wanneer je wil groeien en wil ontwikkelen. Deze paydriver types kunnen hun euro’s verbranden bij teams als Sauber, Williams en Force India. Al kiest die laatste bij hun coureurs wel voor echte talenten en gebruiken ze test- en reserve coureur posities als cash cows.

Vanwege de strengere superlicentie eisen ivgl met vorig jaar is er een veel kleinere pool waaruit ze kunnen kiezen. Er zullen voornamelijk GP2 rijders opduiken en een Celis of Mazepin zal er dus wsl niet meer bijzijn. Latifi is geen top maar heeft voldoet wel aan de nieuwe huidige eisen

Neefje van Lance met een zak geld misschien? Want van geleverde prestaties in de opstapklassen moet die Latifi het vast niet hebben.

Had dan George Russel gekozen, was Toto Wolff weer blij geweest en dan heb je ook nog een goeie rijder die me echt is meegevallen tijdens de vrije trainingen, zat nota bene nog geen seconde af van de tijden van hun vaste rijders
