Voortbestaan Britse GP geen vanzelfsprekendheid

Het is heel goed mogelijk dat de Formule 1 na 2019 een tijdje niet meer terugkeert naar Groot-Brittannië. Dat zegt oud-coureur Derek Warwick in de Jersey Evening Post. Warwick was tot voor kort voorzitter van de BRDC, eigenaar van het circuit van Silverstone. De BRDC activeerde vorig jaar een ontsnappingsclausule om na 2019 onder het huidige contract met de Formule 1 uit te komen.

De Britse Grand Prix is dus nog tot en met volgend jaar verzekerd van een plek op de Formule 1-kalender, daarna niet meer. De BRDC onderhandelt wel met Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media over nieuwe voorwaarden, maar het is geen gegeven dat dit ook een nieuwe overeenkomst oplevert. Warwick: "De Grand Prix is te duur, we lijden te grote verliezen en daarom hebben we een beroep gedaan op de clausule."

"Groot-Brittannië is de bakermat van de autosport. Betekent dit dat er altijd een Britse Grand Prix zal zijn? Zeker niet. Natuurlijk willen we graag dat de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië blijft bestaan en wel op Silverstone, maar het moet wel betaalbaar zijn. We moeten er iets aan geld aan verdienen om in het circuit te kunnen investeren. Onder de huidige voorwaarden is dit niet mogelijk."

Silverstone was in 1950 gastheer voor de opening van het eerste officiële wereldkampioenschap Formule 1. In totaal zijn er nu 68 edities van de Britse Grand Prix verreden, waarvan 51 op het circuit van Silverstone. Een Formule 1-kalender zonder race in Groot-Brittannië is haast ondenkbaar, maar zou volgens Warwick dus wel realiteit kunnen worden.

Dit soort berichten zouden eigenlijk geboycot moeten worden. Dit is pure politiek en komt dicht in de buurt van propaganda.

Zolang een circuit op de kalender staat heb ik er in ieder geval geen medelijden mee.

  Ik snap de circuit eigenaren in Europa dan ook niet, beleg een vergadering en spreek een maximale fee af wat je wilt betalen voor het F1 circus. Zorg iig dat je er geld aan kunt verdienen, dat is het belangrijkste.
  Heeft de F1 geen zin in een lager bedrag, ga maar weer in nog meer zandbakken racen buiten Europa, kijken hoelang de klasse nog bestaat.
  
  De macht ligt bij de Europese circuits, niet bij de F1.
  Laat dat de heren van LM maar blijken.

  dit zijn standaard berichten geworden als de onderhandelingen over nieuwe contracten weer geopend worden, we lijden zware verliezen, gp is te duur, bla bla....
  Aangezien we kosten/opbrengsten verder niet inzichtelijk hebben zijn het nietszeggende berichten, zal allemaal wel..

  Niet helemaal waar, als je al ziet hoeveel verlies de LM groep afgelopen jaren had....
  zonder de hoge fee waren ze al langplat geweest.
  Kappen in de budgetten naar de teams ? leuk voor de groten maar minder voor de kleinere teams.
  Aan het salaris van enkele heren knabbelen in de LM groep ? haat niets uit.
  
  Al met al is de F1 een mega dure sport, ergens moet het vandaan komen. uit de lengte of de breedte.
  
  Ik hoop dat Nederland het plaatje rond krijgt om een race weer op nederlandse bodem te kunnen organiseren en dan maar eens kijken wat er onder aan de streep over blijft, of te kort komt.

  @Raikkonen-fan: Dit soort berichten zijn niet te boycotten! Ja, natuurlijk gaat het hier om politiek en onderhandelingsposiitie. De Britse GP heeft ook dit jaar weer enorme bezoekersaantallen getrokken en volgens Lewis "the best crowd ever...."
  Net als bij het voetballen gaat het om geld in de UK. Als LM te veel eraan overhoudt, gaan de Britten piepen, want dan komt Calimero om de hoek. Deze reactie is dus een Calimero reactie. ("Hij is groot en ik ben klein, dat is NIET eerlijk")....

Het is toch doodzonde zijn als deze uitstekend bezochte klassieker van de kalender zou verdwijnen. Komop Brawn, regelen die handel en rap een beetje!

Onderhandelingsperikelen, meer is het niet. Eind van het liedje is dat Silverstone gewoon op de kalender blijft staan tegen wat gunstiger voorwaarden.
