Oud-coureur Dan Gurney op 86-jarige leeftijd overleden

Oud-coureur Dan Gurney is overleden. De Amerikaan bezweek in zijn huis in Newport Beach aan de gevolgen van een longontsteking. Hij is 86 jaar oud geworden.

Gurney staat vooral bekend als de bedenker van de Gurney-flap, een rechtop staand randje aan de uiteinden van een vleugel, maar zijn palmares als rijder liegt er ook niet om. Zo won hij vier Grands Prix en eindigde hij drie keer op het podium in de Indy 500.

Daarnaast was hij de eerste met een volwaardige racehelm en de eerste die champagne spoot op het podium. Tussen 1959 en 1970 boekte Gurney vier zeges in de Formule 1. In 1967 schreef hij ook de 24 uur van Le Mans nog op zijn naam.

De Amerikaan maakte in 1959 zijn debuut voor Ferrari. Daarover zei hij eens: "Ik was doodsbang om na twintig races al voor Ferrari in de Formule 1 te rijden. Bijna had ik het toen al opgegeven en was ik naar huis gegaan, maar Phil Hill heeft me enorm geholpen en me aangespoord om door te gaan. Mijn debuut ging gepaard met een gigantische kick, ook al kwam er na twintig ronden al een einde aan mijn eerste race door een kapotte radiator."

De gedachten gaan uit naar de nabestaanden van Dan Gurney.

Toch slim hoe hij dat randje op de vleugel had bedacht en dat het ook zoveel voordeel opleverde.

Fantastische vent, hij was niet alleen een verdienstelijk coureur en bedenker van de Gurneyflap.
Hij stond ook aan de wieg van de Eagle F1, de mooiste afgewerkte formule 1 wagen uit zijn tijd.

  Weet best wel wat van F1 maar had geen benul dat hij de uitvinder was van de gurney flap, al is dit eigenlijk wel zeer duidelijk :)

De enige coureur waar Jim Clark bang voor was.
De Gurney Bubble in de Ford GT40 waar hij in 1967 LeMans mee won samen met AJ Foyd was om om Dan met zijn helm op kwijt te kunnen in de lage Ford GT40 (40 inches).

  Hoe veel prijzen Dan Gurney door de jaren heen ook heeft gewonnen, een groter compliment heeft hij nooit meer gekregen.
