Scuderia Toro Rosso slaagt voor crashtests met STR13

Het team van Scuderia Toro Rosso heeft de verplichte crashtests van de internationale autosportbond FIA doorstaan met de auto voor 2018. De Italiaanse renstal is in navolging van Ferrari de tweede equipe waarvan het nieuwe chassis goedgekeurd is voor komend seizoen.

Dit betekent dat Toro Rosso op volle stoom vooruit kan met de verdere ontwikkeling van de STR13. Het opleidingsteam van Red Bull heeft nog geen datum geprikt voor de presentatie van de nieuwe wagen, maar de afgelopen jaren was het gebruikelijk dat ze de bolide een dag voor de eerste wintertest onthulden. Dat zou in dit geval neerkomen op 25 februari. Ferrari trekt op 22 februari het doek van de nieuwe auto.

Toro Rosso beschikt komend seizoen over een andere motorleverancier. In september kwam de bevestiging dat het team voor 2018 over zou stappen van Renault naar Honda. Over die omwenteling zei technisch directeur James Key: "De motoren van Renault en Honda zijn fundamenteel verschillend. De Honda V6 is een zeer compacte aandrijflijn, maar met een heel andere architectuur dan de Renault V6. Je kunt niet dezelfde indeling of ruimte gebruiken als we voor de Renault-motor zouden gebruiken. De ombouw naar Honda vergt veel aanpassingswerk aan de wagen."

"Intern hebben we de stelregel dat wanneer een bolide zich al ver in het ontwikkelingsproces bevindt, we niet meer tornen aan grotere projecten als de aerodynamica. We beginnen dus niet vanaf nul. We hebben het basis-concept van de 2017-auto genomen en werken dat verder uit."

"De lay-out en de omvang van de Honda-motor zijn anders dan bij de Renault-krachtbron. Het concept van de versnellingsbak is hetzelfde, maar de architectuur is anders. Sommige interne onderdelen blijven behouden, andere onderdelen worden geoptimaliseerd, veel onderdelen zijn exclusief voor ons gemaakt. Maar het is niet een compleet andere transmissie dan bij de 2017-auto."

Goed bezig!
Wel bijzonder dat ze niet geleerd hebben van RedBull vorig jaar, de 13 in RB13 bracht veel ongeluk. En dan toch kiezen voor de STR13. Dapper met een Honda onder de motorkap
