Hamilton, Mercedes genomineerd voor Laureus Award

Lewis Hamilton en het team van Mercedes maken kans op een prestigieuze sportprijs. De wereldkampioenen in de Formule 1 zijn genomineerd voor een Laureus Award. De onderscheidingen worden op 27 februari uitgereikt tijdens een show in Monaco.

Hamilton is genomineerd in de categorie Sportman van het Jaar. Zijn concurrentie bestaat uit wielrenner Chris Froome, voetballer Cristiano Ronaldo, atleet Mo Farah en de tennissers Roger Federer en Rafael Nadal.

Mercedes is genomineerd in de categorie Sportploeg van het jaar. De Duitse renstal moet zien af te rekenen met het Franse Davis Cup-team, voetbalclub Real Madrid, basketbalploeg Golden State Warriors, het Nieuw-Zeelandse America's Cup-zeilteam en American Football-kampioen New England Patriots.

Hamilton en Mercedes hebben nooit eerder een Laureus Award op hun naam geschreven. De nominaties uit de Formule 1 waren de voorbije jaren sowieso niet zo succesvol. Sebastian Vettel was in 2014 de laatste Formule 1-coureur die de prijs voor Sportman van het Jaar in ontvangst mocht nemen en Brawn GP werd in 2010 bekroond met de award voor Sportploeg van het Jaar. Nico Rosberg ging vorig jaar wel met de prijs voor Doorbraak van het Jaar aan de haal, terwijl Daniel Ricciardo hem in 2015 voor ging in deze categorie.
