'Aankondiging over Grand Prix in Vietnam aanstaande'

Vietnam koerst in rap tempo af op een plekje op de Formule 1-kalender. Christian Sylt van Forbes vernam van bronnen dat Liberty Media ergens in de komende weken met het nieuws over een stratenrace in het Aziatische land naar buiten zal treden. Dat ving hij op tijdens een drukke dag van vergaderingen tussen de racepromotors en de leiding van de Formule 1 in Londen.

"Ze zullen binnenkort een aankondiging doen over een race in Vietnam", ving Sylt van een bron op. Het gaat dan om een evenement op een stratencircuit in de hoofdstad Hanoi. Officieel is het allemaal nog niet, dus er zijn nog geen details bekend over wanneer Vietnam voor het eerst zijn opwachting zal maken op de kalender. Het is echter geen geheim dat het land al langer flirt met de Formule 1.

Reeds in 2010 doken verhalen op over een Grand Prix in Vietnam. Hans Geist, in het verleden gelinkt aan Formule 1-projecten in Rusland, Oostenrijk en Bahrein, diende een voorstel voor een Formule 1-circuit in bij de regering van het Aziatische land. Een concept voor een baan ter waarde van 150 miljoen dollar nabij Ho Chi Minh City kwam niet verder dan het ministerie van Planning en Investering.

Bernie Ecclestone is ook eens benaderd voor een Formule 1-race in Vietnam. "Ik had in augustus 2016 een overeenkomst kunnen tekenen met Vietnam. Maar dat land heeft totaal geen autosportgeschiedenis. Ik was bekritiseerd voor andere Grands Prix in landen die weinig racehistorie hadden, zoals Azerbeidzjan en Rusland. Bovendien wilde ik niet een extra race in een regio waar we al met enkele zeer goede promotors samenwerkten."

Formule 1-sponsor Heineken zou wel graag een Formule 1-race in Vietnam zien. Op de vraag aan het biermerk naar mogelijke nieuwe Grand Prix-locaties, antwoordde directeur Gianluca di Tondo twee jaar geleden al: "Dan denk ik weer aan Azië, namelijk Vietnam. We zijn daar vertegenwoordigd via een lokale partner en wij hadden hen te gast tijdens het weekend op Monza. Ze vonden het prachtig! Dus waarom zouden we niet gaan racen in Ho Chi Minh City?"

  zou wel een extra spanning met zich meebrengen een gp in Vietnam, er zitten in die ondergrondse tunnels nog veel VC en die schieten op alles wat beweegt, vooral F1 coureurs, daar zijn ze dol op...
