Stirling Moss trekt zich terug uit publieke leven

Le Mans-winnaar en voormalig Formule 1-coureur Stirling Moss trekt zich terug uit het publieke leven. Dat heeft zijn zoon Elliot bekendgemaakt in een brief.

Sir Stirling Moss werd op 22 december 2016 opgenomen in een Singaporees ziekenhuis met een infectie aan de borstkas. Hij werd teruggevlogen naar Groot-Brittannië en werd pas op 11 mei uit het ziekenhuis ontslagen. De 88-jarige heeft echter nog een flink hersteltraject te gaan en dat doet hij het liefst buiten het oog van het publiek. De viervoudig vice-kampioen in de Formule 1 heet daarom besloten om zijn website te sluiten en zich na zeventig jaar terug te trekken uit het publieke leven.

Zoon Elliot schreef om die reden een brief. "Voor alle vrienden en fans die regelmatig deze website bezoeken voor updates wil mijn vader aankondigen dat hij hem gaat sluiten. Naar aanleiding van zijn heftige infecties eind 2016 en het daaropvolgende langzame herstel is het besluit genomen dat de onvermoeibare man op zijn 88ste eindelijk met pensioen gaat. Op die manier kunnen hij en mijn moeder genieten van hun welverdiende rust en meer tijd met elkaar en de rest van de familie doorbrengen. De gehele familie Moss wil iedereen bedanken voor alle liefde en steun door de jaren en we wensen jullie alleen een gelukkig en fortuinlijk 2018."

Moss was van 1951 tot en met 1961 actief in de Formule 1. Tussen 1955 en 1958 eindigde hij vier keer op rij als tweede in het wereldkampioenschap met Mercedes, Maserati en Rob Walker Racing. Ook tussen 1959 en 1961 was Moss actie namens Rob Walker Racing en hij werd drie keer op rij derde in de titelstrijd. In totaal won hij zestien Grand Prix en stond hij 24 keer op het podium. Ook vertrok hij veertien maal van pole position en noteerde hij zeventien keer de snelste ronde.

Ook buiten de Formule 1 had Moss succes. Zowel in 1953 als in 1956 werd hij tweede tijdens de 24 uur van Le Mans (met respectievelijk Peter Walker en Peter Collins aan zijn zijde), terwijl hij in 1953 met Peter Whitehead de 12 uur van Reims won. Daarnaast won Moss in 1954 de 12 uur van Sebring met Bill Loyd. De MIlle Miglia wist hij met Denis Jenkinson in 1955 te winnen. Een ongeluk dwong Moss om te stoppen met de Formule 1, maar tot op 81-jarige leeftijd zou hij nog achter het stuur kruipen voor historische evenementen.

Een zeer bijzondere man! Ongekend dat hij al zo oud is geworden gezien de vele avonturen en gevaren. Laat hem nu nog maar even rustig genieten van zijn oude dag :-)

Met opgeheven hoofd het toneel verlaten. Voor mij blijft hij één van de groten, ook al ving hij meermaals langs de titel in de F1.

Wat een prachtige foto overigens, zo’n super cleane Mercedes uit 1955 tegen die blauwe achtergrond, volle tribune en nog de ‘brandveilige’ of beter gezeg de brandzekere strobalen.

Hoog boven de cockpit uitstekend en nog geen gevaar van halo’s in de buurt...

Een absolute legende. Ik ben blij dat ik hem in de laatste paar jaar een aantal keer op Goodwood Festival of Speed heb mogen zien rijden. Dat zal ik nooit vergeten.

Ik heb hem in de jaren '80 op Zandvoort mogen ontmoeten tijdens een historische race. Hij kwam aan in een Mercedes sport met zijn vriendin. Ik kreeg een handtekening en hij racete ook in een historische Mercedes. Hij was toen tegen de vijftig en nog steeds in very good shape. Hij heeft ook eens gezegd dat hij de huidige F1 te veilig vind. Voor hem was de spanning met de dood op de loer een onontbeerlijk onderdeel van de echte F1.
