Force India waarschijnlijk zonder stegosaurus-vleugels

Het team van Force India verbaasde vriend en vijand door vorig jaar in Singapore een haaienvin te introduceren met daarop 32 kleine vleugeltjes. De oplossing van de Indiase renstal werd al snel omgedoopt tot 'stegosaurus-vleugels'. Daarmee genereerde Force India meer downforce, maar de stegosaurus-vin sterft waarschijnlijk uit omdat ook de haaienvin verdwijnt.

Force India gaat daardoor een andere kant op. Andrew Green, technisch directeur bij de Indiase renstal, sluit echter niet uit dat een van de andere teams wel kleine vleugeltjes aan de motorkap toevoegt. "Ik kan me voorstellen dat iemand wat probeert om het negatieve effect van het wegvallen van de haaienvin te verkleinen", vertelde hij aan Auto Motor und Sport.

"Zonder de haaienvin botst een grote vortex rechtstreeks op de achtervleugel. Door de motorkap door te trekken konden we die luchtstroom vorig jaar gecontroleerd over de achtervleugel dirigeren. Des te eerder de motorkap omlaag gaat, hoe eerder die vortex ook omlaag duikt en de achtervleugel raakt. Dat is helemaal niet goed voor de aerodynamische werking van de auto."

Dat zijn de zorgen van nu. Vorig jaar steeg Force India boven zichzelf uit met de VJM10. Green: "We hadden bij vrijwel elke race nieuwe onderdelen. Twee Grands Prix voor het einde van het seizoen hebben we de ontwikkeling stopgezet. In Mexico introduceerden we ons laatste pakket. Vanaf Brazilië hadden we geen upgrades meer en is de auto ongewijzigd gebleven."

"Voor een team als het onze is het een geweldige prestatie dat we elke race over nieuwe onderdelen beschikten. Nooit eerder heeft Force India zoveel updates geproduceerd. Deze hoeveelheid nieuwe onderdelen was nooit eerder vertoond door ons team. Het afgelopen jaar zijn er meer updates geweest dan in de twee seizoenen ervoor."

  Ook met vleugels kwam een Stegosaurus maar moeilijk van de grond. Dus afschaffen was ook toen al eigenlijk helemaal niet zo'n gek idee.

Beetje bij beetje ben ik steeds meer fan van team FI geworden. Met een beperkt budget toch lekker mee kunnen doen met de grote jongens, ze hebben inderdaad het hele seizoen goede updates en ze hebben ook nog eens interessante coureurs .

  Exact ook mijn sentiment. Zoals ze zelf ook aangeven hebben ze relatief gezien het beste team op de grid. De budget / punten verhouding is namelijk het allerbeste. Dat is knap.

  Het is net als het toen het team nog van Jordan was... Ook toen wisten ze de toenmalige topteams regelmatig onder druk te zetten en leuke resultaten te halen. Ze hebben toen zelfs nog races gewonnen, maar dat is met de huidige betrouwbaarheid van de topteams helaas niet meer reëel.

Die vortex wordt gecreëerd door de voorvleugel, die zijn zo complex om een aantal kleine vortex te ontwikkelen om de 'vuile' luchtstroom van de wielen/banden om de auto heen te geleiden. Alle kleine vleugeltjes en slots zorgen voor een vortex die aan de buitenzijde een rechtsom draaiende zuigende werking heeft om de 'vuile' lucht mee te trekken. Aan de binnenzijde van de voorvleugel zijn de vinnetjes gericht op het bargeboard om een zo groot mogelijke wervelwind tegen de 'vuile' lucht aan te drukken (linksom).
Samen trekken deze twee vortex alle lucht om de auto om zo min mogelijk luchtweerstand voor de wielen/banden te hebben en de achtervleugel van de turbulente lucht te ontzien.
Dus eigenlijk creëeren deze auto's met deze voorvleugel hun eigen valkuilen, waar de haaienvin nog voor stabiliteit zorgde zullen de teams nu met andere oplossingen op de proppen moeten komen om dit fenomeen op te lossen. Met de aero aanpassingen voor 2019 om de reclame beter zichtbaar te maken komen alleen maar meer en meer flaps en tierelantijnen om de luchtstroom te verbeteren.
Wat ik dan wel weer interessant vindt.
