Opnieuw asfalteren circuit van Barcelona vrijdag klaar

Het proces om een nieuwe asfaltlaag neer te leggen op het Circuit de Catalunya nabij Barcelona moet deze vrijdag af zijn. Komend weekend vinden dan gelijk de eerste races met GT-wagens plaats. "Des te eerder auto's rubber neerleggen op het nieuwe asfalt, des te meer grip zal het circuit bieden wanneer de eerste wintertest van de Formule 1 er plaatsvindt", schrijft Diario AS.

Bandenleverancier Pirelli had namelijk wat zorgen geuit over de staat van het nieuwe asfalt. De Italiaanse bandenfabrikant is bang dat de grip in de eerste dagen van de eerst test ter voorbereiding op het seizoen 2018 nog ver te zoeken zal zijn. Het Circuit de Catalunya in de buurt van Barcelona is van 26 februari tot en met 1 maart en van 6 tot en met 9 maart gastheer voor twee Formule 1-tests.

Diario Sport meldt dat de baan momenteel de laatste hand legt aan het alles in gereedheid brengen voor de GT-races van komend weekend. "Alles dat betrekking heeft tot het circuit moet dan klaar zijn, omdat we dan weer operationeel moeten zijn", aldus Carlos Fradera, verantwoordelijk voor het onderhoud van het Circuit de Catalunya. Het is voor de derde keer sinds 1991 dat het circuit van Barcelona volledig opnieuw geasfalteerd is.

Ik snap Pirelli wel, die hebben ook amper mogelijkheden om te testen en een nieuwe asfaltlaag op een zeer bekend circuit geeft weinig vergelijkingsmateriaal met de reeds aanwezige data natuurlijk. Als de banden dan in een race niet voldoen hebben zij het gelijk weer gedaan.

Voor de F1 teams zelf zal het een minder groot issue zijn. Alhoewel die natuurlijk ook hun data proberen te vergelijken met de oude situatie

Het schijnt in elk geval dat Barcelona, naast de GT wagens dit weekend, nog tig andere evenementen heeft om er flink wat asfalt neer te leggen. Hopelijk is het genoeg voor het F1 geweld.
