Marko: "Gasly is gerijpt in de Japanse Super Formula"

Een jaartje in de Japanse Super Formula heeft Pierre Gasly geen windeieren gelegd. Sterker nog, de Fransman heeft zich in Japan dusdanig ontwikkeld dat Red Bull besloot om hem door te schuiven naar de Formule 1. Moest hij na het winnen van de GP2-titel in 2016 nog teleurgesteld aanhoren dat er geen plek voor hem was in de Formule 1, nu kan hij zich opmaken voor een heel seizoen bij Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Dat is voor een groot deel te danken aan zijn ontwikkeling in de Super Formula. Red Bull-motorsportadviseur Helmut Marko verkondigde aan Autosport: "Pierre won de GP2 in zijn tweede jaar in het voorportaal van de Formule 1 en had wat pech, maar maakte ook fouten. In Japan is hij daarna volwassen geworden. Hij is gerijpt in de Super Formula, hetgeen absoluut noodzakelijk was. Hij moest voor zichzelf leren zorgen, wat daar goed mogelijk was omdat niemand zijn taal sprak. Hij moest veranderen en dat is hem gelukt."

Sportief gezien slaagde Gasly erin om van zijn team Mugen een winnend team te maken. Aan het begin van het seizoen vielen de resultaten niet echt mee, maar langzaam maar zeker gingen de renstal en de 21-jarige Fransman steeds beter presteren. Uiteindelijk kwam Gasly maar een half puntje tekort voor de titel. Marko: "Hij heeft zijn team aan de top gebracht en laten zien een winnaar te zijn. Het was de juiste beslissing om de tijd te nemen met Pierre."

Gasly maakte vorig jaar in Maleisië zijn Formule 1-debuut namens Toro Rosso als vervanger van Daniil Kvyat. In totaal kwam hij in 2017 vijf keer in actie tijdens een Grand Prix; het weekend in de Verenigde Staten moest hij missen omdat hij toen voor de seizoensfinale van de Super Formula (die overigens niet doorging vanwege een storm, red.) in Japan vertoefde. Punten scoorde hij nog niet op het hoogste niveau, zijn beste resultaat is een in Brazilië behaalde twaalfde plaats.

  Jammer genoeg zijn meerdere circuits nieuw voor hen. Ze zullen dus nog niet alles uit de wagen kunnen halen wat er in zit, maar dat zal gedurende het seizoen wel beter worden, mag ik aannemen. Ik hoop echt voor STR dat het goed klikt met de Honda samenwerking en dat Honda progressie heeft geboekt deze winter. Die Gasly lijkt me trouwens een sympathieke, vriendelijke vent. Nu nog goed presteren.

  Bedoel dat er nog weinig van te zeggen is. Wat chassis, motor én coureurs betreft.
