Felipe Massa is bedroefd en teleurgesteld. Nu hij de Formule 1 vaarwel heeft gezegd is Brazilië niet meer vertegenwoordigd op de grid in de koningsklasse van de autosport. Door de jaren heen heeft Brazilië meerdere kampioenen en veel uitstekende Formule 1-coureurs afgeleverd, maar de bron is opgedroogd. Het veld telt in 2018 geen enkele Braziliaan.

Massa baalt dat er een einde aan een tijdperk is gekomen. "Natuurlijk ben ik teleurgesteld dat er geen Braziliaan op de Formule 1-grid staat dit jaar", vertelde hij aan Auto Hebdo. "Mijn land was altijd vruchtbare bodem voor Formule 1-coureurs, denk aan Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet en Emerson Fittipaldi. Ik ben vereerd dat mijn naam ook in dat rijtje staat. Wat me zorgen baart, is dat er zich geen nieuwe Braziliaanse talenten aandienen. De economische situatie in Brazilië speelt daar een rol bij, maar is zeker niet het enige probleem."

De autosportladder in eigen land rammelt aan alle kanten, stelt Massa. "Er is niets dat jonge coureurs voorbereidt om vanuit de karting door te stromen naar de autosport. Er zijn geen nationale series die de talentjes voorbereiden om de oversteek naar Europa, waar de meeste mogelijkheden liggen, te maken. Ik zie overal Formule 4-kampioenschappen als paddenstoelen uit de grond schieten. Brazilië heeft ook zoiets nodig. De Braziliaanse autosportbond heeft een nieuwe voorzitter gekregen. Hopelijk onderneemt hij iets om jonge rijders te stimuleren en te helpen."

  Lijkt me een schone taak voor Felipe om zich volledig op de Braziliaanse F4 en de jeugdopleiding te storten.
  Hij is (net) geen WK geworden misshien kan hij er Brazilië wel een paar bezorgen.

Een F1 zonder Zuid amerikanen is inderdaad jammer, ze hebben daar ook een autosport traditie en het doet wel afbreuk aan het geheel dat ze r nu niet bij zijn. Of zou Massa het jammer vinden dat Massa er niet meer bij is?

Massa heeft een mooie carrière gehad hoor, maar ik vind het wat ver gaan om hem in dit rijtje te plaatsen. Waarom noemt hij bijvoorbeeld niet Barichello, Nasr, Piquet jr, Bruno Senna, Di Grassi, Bernoldi, Diniz, Pizzonia, Zonta, Burti, Marques?

  Ik vind dat hij wel in het rijtje mag, samen met Barrichello, of anders die 2 in een eigen rijtje. De heren zijn allebei 2de geweest en hebben wel veel meer bereikt en langer meegedaan in de F1 dan de anderen in je lijstje.

  Ja, rijtje onder Fittipaldi, Piquet en Senna. Onder het rijtje met alleen Barichello en Massa dan de rest hoewel daar ook nog wel verschillen tussen zitten.

Foto: Massa is zo doevig dat hij uit stil protest rondjes over het circuit van Interlagos aan het lopen is.

Met zijn korte beentjes heeft hij nu toch al ruim 75 km afgelegd en bij de finsh wordt het hem steeds even te vee. Maar net zo snel weet hij zich dan weer te vermannen.

Om het uur permiteert Felipe zich een plaspauze van vijf minuten. ;)
