Renault: "Talenten beoordelen geen exacte wetenschap"

Het team van Renault heeft bij de evaluatie van Jack Aitken door de vingers gezien dat hij zijn doelstellingen vorig jaar niet heeft gehaald. Aitken eindigde afgelopen seizoen als tweede in de GP3. Renault eiste eigenlijk de titel, maar de 22-jarige Brit mocht toch blijven in het opleidingsprogramma. De Franse renstal streek voor Aitken over het hart.

Renault-directeur Cyril Abiteboul legt aan Autosport uit waarom. "We zijn geen robots. Elke coureur in onze opleiding krijgt doelstellingen mee en als hij of zij die doelstellingen weet te verwezenlijken, promoveert diegene naar het volgende niveau en blijven we hem of haar steunen. Maar we kijken ook naar de omstandigheden en welke incidenten zich hebben afgespeeld."

"Talenten beoordelen is geen exacte wetenschap. Dus hoewel Aitken het doel om kampioen te worden niet heeft bereikt, verdiende hij het wel om bij Renault te blijven. Het was in ieders belang om met elkaar door te gaan. Op die manier stoppen we ook wat emotie in het programma."

"Wij geloven in Jack. Hij gaat zijn derde jaar in de Renault Sport Academy in. Als we niet in hem hadden geloofd, hadden we nooit zoveel in hem geïnvesteerd. Dan heb ik het niet eens over geld, maar meer over tijd en energie. Wij geloven dat hij vorig jaar de GP3-titel had kunnen veroveren. Ook al is dat niet gebeurd, hadden we toch alle reden om hem te behouden."

Aitken rijdt komend seizoen in de Formule 2. Hij vormt bij ART Grand Prix een koppel met George Russell, degene die afgelopen seizoen de ambitie van het Renault-talent om de GP3-titel te pakken dwarsboomde.

Je zou toch verwachten dat van alle mensen in de wereld hij wel de laatste figuur mag zijn die zijn mond mag open doen over doelstellingen en verwachtingen. Hij schaamt zich werkelijk nergens voor. Opportunist!!!!!
