Horner: "F1 moet de teams een ultimatum stellen"

Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media en de internationale autosportbond FIA moeten nu knopen doorhakken over de richting die de Formule 1 op gaat voor de toekomst. Dan dienen de renstallen zelf maar te bepalen of ze zich daar in kunnen vinden en actief blijven in de koningsklasse van de autosport of niet. Dat idee voor een soort ultimatum oppert Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner in gesprek met RACER.

"Ik denk dat het tijd is dat Liberty en de FIA regels samenstellen voor de toekomst en een koers voor de Formule 1 uitstippelen. Dan moeten ze tegen de teams zeggen: 'Dit is hoe de Formule 1 eruit gaat zien, of je het leuk vindt of niet'. En dan is het aan elk team voor zich om te bepalen of ze daaraan mee willen doen of niet", aldus Horner.

V6-motoren

In diverse werkgroepen en vergaderingen is al veel gesteggeld over de motorformule en aerodynamische reglementen voor 2021. Horner wil bijvoorbeeld dat de Formule 1 afscheid neemt van de hybride V6-motoren, maar daar gaan Liberty Media en de FIA niet aan beginnen. Het voorstel voor de periode na 2020, met V6-turbomotoren en versimpelde hybride technologie, is wat hem betreft een goed compromis.

Horner: "Ik zou liegen als ik zei dat ik helemaal blij was, want het liefst keer ik terug naar krijsende, atmosferische V10- of V12-motoren. Maar ik begrijp de redenen voor de motorformule waar men voor gekozen heeft. Ze proberen verantwoordelijk te werk te gaan op gebied van kosten, performance en geluid, precies de facetten die belangrijk zijn voor een Formule 1-motor. We zien al wat interesse van autofabrikanten - zoals Aston Martin - op voorwaarde het betaalbaar blijft."

Porsche

De Red Bull Racing-teambaas heeft in tegenstelling tot de geruchten nog niets vernomen over eventuele belangstelling van Porsche. "Ik heb nog niks gehoord, behalve dat Porsche bijeenkomsten over de nieuwe motorformule heeft bijgewoond. Afgezien daarvan helemaal niets."

Alle teams dienen hun visie op de F1 in bij de Liberty Media en de FIA en die gaan er dan mee aan de slag. Daar komt dan iets uit en zo gaat het worden. Take it or leave it.

En een gulden middenweg? Een X aantal ideeën bij de teams en motorfabrikanten (ook de eventuele toekomstige fabrikanten) voorleggen en het idee met het beste support word het. Ben je het er niet mee eens? Jammer dan.

Zou het eigenlijk mogelijk zijn om atmosferische blokken terug te laten keren? Uiteraard is het antwoord 'nee', maar for the sake of the argument. Stel dat het gebonden wordt aan een uitstoot of verbruiks-norm. Kan het technisch toch haalbaar zijn een V12 te maken die presteert en niet meer uitstoot dan een huidig blok?

Ik bedoel, Mazda doet het nog altijd in de reguliere industrie en dat is een specifieke keus. Zijn dat auto's waar veel wegenbelasting voor betaald moet worden? Qua energielabels hebben ze gewoon nette B en C labels op de normale versies van de Mazda 6.

Waarmee ze in die vergaderingen mee hadden moeten beginnen is het opstellen van een stappenplan. Een overzicht met daarop data wanneer bepaalde zaken opgestart dienden te worden en wanneer de deadline voor die stap zou zijn, dus inclusief ultimatums. Dan had men een houvast en kon men elkaar daaraan houden.

Een normale gang van zaken in grote en kleine organisaties, maar uiteraard niet in het chaotische wereldje van de Formule 1.
