Race of Champions: Duitsland andermaal sterkste in Nations Cup, Van Buren maakt sterke indruk

Team Duitsland bleek in de Nations Cup van de Race of Champions wederom de sterkste. Voor het eerst in jaren deed viervoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 Sebastian Vettel niet mee, maar dat weerhield 'rookies' Rene Rast en Timo Bernhard er niet van om alsnog de titel te pakken. In het King Fahd-stadion in de Saudi-Arabische hoofdstad Ryadh deed ook Rudy van Buren mee. De 25-jarige Nederlander, die een contract afdwong als simulatorcoureur bij McLaren, maakte een buitengewoon sterke indruk.

Van Buren moest het in zijn eerste race op nemen tegen niemand minder dan Tom Kristensen, een absolute legende. De Deen won de 24 uur van Le Mans maar liefst negen keer. Van Buren kon prima met de druk omgaan en finishte op slechts een paar tienden van Kristensen. In zijn tweede race moest Van Buren het opnemen tegen Formule 3-kampioen Lando Norris. Van Buren won de wedstrijd en pakte ook de zege in zijn derde race van de avond omdat rivaal Joel Eriksson in de eerste bocht crashte.

De twee overwinningen waren echter niet genoeg om door te gaan naar de halve finale, maar Van Buren heeft zich in ieder geval prima laten zien. De halve finale werd een strijd tussen Duitsland en Saudi-Arabië, terwijl in het tweede duel Team Nordic en Latijns-Amerika tegen elkaar strijden. Duitsland plaatste zich eenvoudig voor de halve finale, Team Nordic en Team Latijns-Amerika maakte er een ware show van. Voormalig Formule 1-coureur Juan Pablo Montoya wist Petter Solberg in de tiebreak te verslaan en zo kwam er een finale tussen Duitsland en Latijns-Amerika.

In de finale races werd het wederom spannend. Rene Rast wist Montoya van zich af te houden, maar WEC-coureur Timo Bernhard moest zijn meerdere erkennen in Helio Castroneves. In de beslissende wedstrijd wist DTM-kampioen Rast Castroneves wel van zich af te houden en zo won Duitsland voor de achtste keer de Nations Cup.

Vandaag wordt beslist wie zich de kampioen der kampioenen mag noemen. In een individuele strijd wordt bepaald wie de beste coureur ter wereld van 2018 wordt. De strijd barst vanmiddag om 14:00 uur Nederlandse tijd los.

Echt super gedaan van Van Buren. Die jongen was niet voor niet Nederlands kartkampioen in 2003 en is werkelijk onklopbaar met simracing. Best indrukwekkend wat Van Buren liet zien als simracer. Toch maar mooi "supertalent" Norris geklopt. Hopelijk komt hij ooit in een echt raceteam terecht.

  Dat wil niet veel zeggen. Er zijn er die Europees kampioen zijn geworden in het karten waarvan niks gekomen is. En zijn lengte zal hem beperken in de singleseaters maar een gt-carriere is zeker mogelijk. En goed met een kart kunnen rijden wil niet zeggen dat je goed gaat zijn in andere raceklasses. Dus petje af voor wat hij liet zien de laatste dagen.

Ik zou zeggen Marko doe eens een belletje voor TR....en dan evt bij bewezen kwaliteiten naast Max. Met Sainz terug gaat toch niets worden als Max nog bij RB zit.

Hij had maar zes rondjes geoefend met die auto en moest het echt maar nipt afleggen tegen Kristensen om vervolgens doodleuk Norris te verslaan.

  Het schijnt dat er tegelijk met dit evenement weer een paar publieke executies plaatsvonden. De locals moesten dus een keuze maken, racen staat nu eenmaal wat lager op de ladder bij de Saudi's.
