Wehrlein: "Ik ben de DTM nooit uit het oog verloren"

Pascal Wehrlein keert na twee jaar Formule 1 bij achterhoedeteams Manor en Sauber terug op het oude nest Mercedes in de DTM. De Duitser kroonde zich in 2015 al tot jongste kampioen aller tijden in de toerwagenklasse, waarna hij de overstap maakte naar de koningsklasse van de autosport. In de Formule 1 was voor 2018 echter geen plek meer voor Wehrlein.

De 23-jarige coureur ervaart dit niet als een degradatie. "Ik bewaar fantastische herinneringen aan de DTM. Natuurlijk mijn titel in 2015, maar ook de geweldige teamgeest die er binnen Mercedes heerste en de schitterende ervaringen die ik heb meegemaakt. Ik ben de DTM nooit uit het oog verloren ten tijde van mijn periode in de Formule 1 en ik heb ook een paar races bijgewoond. De DTM is behoorlijk veranderd sinds mijn laatste DTM-race, maar ik hou van uitdagingen en ik kan niet wachten om met de nieuwe auto de baan op te gaan. De eerste tests kunnen mij niet snel genoeg beginnen."

Ulrich Fritz, DTM-baas binnen Mercedes-Benz: "Pascal had binnen de kortste keren zijn naam gevestigd in de DTM en groeide in 2015 uit tot de jongste kampioen die deze serie ooit heeft gehad. Iedereen binnen het team is blij dat hij terug is voor ons laatste jaar in de DTM. Wehrlein heeft veel vrienden gemaakt bij onze renstal en het contact is nooit verwaterd toen hij in de Formule 1 reed. Er is een hoop veranderd in de DTM - met nieuwe auto's, nieuwe banden en nieuwe regels - maar we zijn ervan overtuigd dat Pascal met zijn ervaring en toewijding daar rap aan gewend zal raken."

Dit is echt het grootste onzin verhaal ooit dat door een exwerknemer van Force India de wereld in is gegooid. Tevens al lang ontkracht door Force India.   Zijn echte mening zou ongeveer dit zijn: Nou ik zit weer in een auto met een dak boven mn hoofd. Volgend jaar stoppen ze er mee, dus ik moet ook nog eens alles of niets gaan rijden om bij het merk te blijven... Dit jaar wordt vast GE....wel....dig... ;pruil gezicht;

  Wehrlein zal moeten uitkijen om zijn imago hoog te houden.
  Na een titel in deze klasse kan hij er bijna alleen maar op verliezen. In ieder geval wat de buitenwacht betreft.

In zijn DTM tijdperk was het niet Ocon, maar Wehrlein die het pareltje van de academie was.

  Blij dat dat hier dan uit de lucht is. Hij komt bij mij ook over als een sympathieke jongen, met veel talent. Ik had hem graag in de Williams gezien, denk dat hij Stroll echt tot moes had gereden.

Ja standaard antwoord.... Jammer dat hij naar Willems kon, talent heeft hij arrogant is min puntje als dit werkelijk zo is. Naast Frijns op de eerste rij in de DTM.... En dan op pole Frijns uiteraard haha. Gave race klasse wel.

Omgekeerd was dat wel zo (DTM -> F1 = degradatie?)

Even zonder gekheid, deze zin is niet door Wehrlein uitgesproken, maar interpretatie van de immer objectieve journalist.
