Filipe Albuquerque: "In F1 is geld belangrijker dan talent"

Filipe Albuquerque vestigde eind januari de aandacht op zich door samen met twee teamgenoten de 24 uur van Daytona te winnen. De 32-jarige Portugees gold in de opstapklasses als een groot talent, maar daarna is hij een beetje uit beeld verdwenen. In 2010 deed hij van zich spreken door de Race of Champions op zijn naam te schreven, maar een kans in de Formule 1 kreeg hij nooit.

Aan Diario de Noticias legt Albuquerque uit waarom niet: "Toen ik 18 jaar was, had ik een contract bij Red Bull. Ze geloofden in me en gaven me het gevoel dat de wereld geweldig en eerlijk was. Ik voldeed aan alle doelstellingen. Ik was in elk kampioenschap waar ik aan meedeed de beste rookie, veel meer kon ik doen. Alleen in de laatste fase richting de Formule 1 haperde de machine."

"Voor de GP2 kreeg ik van Red Bull opeens te horen dat ik geld moest inleggen. Ze wilden dat ik mee ging betalen aan een stoeltje. Dat is het probleem als je dichter in de buurt van de Formule 1 komt, geld is belangrijker dan talent."

Niet dat hij Red Bull iets kwalijk neemt. "Zonder Red Bull had ik een studie moeten volgen en had ik mijn carrière in de autosport nooit kunnen financieren. Bovendien was ik jong en probeerde ik mijn droom te verwezenlijken. De situatie in de autosport is nu niet anders, maar er zijn veel ergere dingen in de wereld. Daarnaast richt ik me alleen op dingen waar ik invloed op uit kan oefenen."

      Hoe kan het anders met zo een dure sport. Kun je ook op voetbal toepassen dezelfde simpele uitspraak. Weinig zeggend, zoals de man zelf.

    Nee Filipe....als je niet genoeg talent hebt is geld alleen maar belangrijk in de F1. Heb je talent...hoef je geen geld mee te nemen en staan ze voor je in de rij.

    Het is een beetje van beide. Met talent alleen wint geen enkele coureur titels en zonder talent wordt nooit het volledige potentieel van een wagen benut.

    maar...maar...gisteren zeiden die Russen nog dat bij Sirotkin vooral zijn talent de doorslag had gegeven...en niet die 15 miljoen euries... :(

    Zeker met het huidige puntensysteem komt je echt niet ver in de F1. Op dit moment zijn er hooguit 3 coureurs die puur en alleen door geld in de F1 zitten: Ericsson, Stroll en Sirotkin, waarbij ik de laatste nog heel even het voordeel van de twijfel gun.

    Tja, 14 jaar geleden had Red Bull nog geen opleidingsteam. Sindsdien is talent in mijn optiek wel de grootste factor geweest voor Red Bull, maar destijds zal vast aan coureurs gevraagd zijn om geld mee te brengen. Dat is lange tijd heel normaal geweest en is voor veel teams nog steeds de normaalste gang van zaken (of dat geld nu komt van een sponsor of van een fabrikant, zoals Ferrari of Mercedes).

    Sla me dood maar kan me niks herinneren van zen feeder tijd, ken hem van A1 GP met portugal waar hij het naar behoren deed en later van vooral van endurance racing.

    Zo ferm zal hij dus wel niet geweest zijn zeker, volg feeders sinds DC en Rubiño in de F3 reden :)

      Heeft buiten wat F2.0 titels ook nooit veel gepresteerd. Een ereplekje in de F3.5 met 1 overwinning en dat was het. Dat hij de F1 niet gehaald heeft, heeft meer te maken met talent dan met geld.

      In de Renault klassen was Felipe goed. Hij reed in 2007 voor Epsilon Euskadi en won 1 race, pakte 1 podium als 2e en hoewel hij niet elke race punten pakte viel hij ook nooit uit, hij eindigde dat jaar als 4e in totaal, boven ene Giedo vd Garde

      Waar hij zijn carrière echt een kickstart gaf was in de race of Champions, zoals reeds werd genoemd. Hij had toen al een lijntje naar Audi omdat hij in de Italiaanse GT en Superstar klasse voor het merk reed, maar nadat hij Sebastian Vettel (zijn oude concurrent uit de WSR) en Sebastian Loeb klopte en de RoC 2010 won zette Audi hem in de DTM. Een superster werd hij niet maar hij vond wel zijn draai in de Endurance Racerij (Le Mans, Daytona, IMSA) Niet iedereen hoeft een F1-ster te worden.

      Dat beweert hier toch ook niemand? Maar het is wel geinig dat het altijd die personen zijn die gefaald zijn in de opstapklassen een indrukwekkende indruk te maken of die in de F1 te licht bevonden zijn, die beginnen te klagen over geld.

      Lijkt me toch vrij logisch, want er is altijd een journalist die meent de prikkelende vraag te moeten stellen: "Leuk wat je nu doet, maar waarom rij je geen F1?"

    ERgens klopt het wel want een team als Mercedes zou zonder centen hun topengineers en organisatorische talenten in hun staff, ook niet kunnen betalen..

    Geld is bijna onmisbaar om de F1 te halen maar om succesvol te zijn in de F1 is vooral talent onmisbaar.
