Lowe verkiest kleine aanpassingen boven grote verandering bij Williams

Paddy Lowe zal geen radicale veranderingen aanbrengen bij Williams in een poging om het team verder naar voren te helpen op de startopstelling. Dat zegt de technisch directeur van de renstal tegen RACER.

In de eerste twee seizoenen van de V6-turbomotoren werd Williams twee keer derde in het kampioenschap voor constructeurs, maar in 2016 en 2017 kwam het Britse team niet verder dan de vijfde positie. Om het tij te keren werd Lowe afgelopen maart als technisch directeur aangetrokken en sindsdien is hij bezig geweest met het identificeren van verbeterpunten. Zijn aanpak daarbij: subtiele aanpassingen in plaats van grote veranderingen. "Het belangrijkste is om het project zelf te focussen, in dit geval de auto voor 2018, maar daarnaast moeten ook de organisatie en haar capaciteiten ontwikkeld worden. Welke investeringen gaan we doen in machines, software en technologie? We moeten het budget op de best mogelijke manier gebruiken. Stoppen we genoeg energie in de juiste zaken? Dat zijn dingen waar ik, naast de auto, ook aan werk."

"Er hoef niets radicaals gedaan te worden. Het is ook niet mijn stijl om ergens binnen te komen en een revolutie te starten, omdat ik dat onnodig en niet effectief vind. We hebben eigenlijk een goed team, dat we beter moeten maken door in de juiste richting te ontwikkelen en de zwakke plekken te verstevigen met de focus en de prioriteit bij de dingen die ertoe doen."

Lowe maakte de overstap van Mercedes naar Williams en ziet met eigen ogen dat een team met meer budget en meer medewerkers, zoals Mercedes, meer mogelijkheden heeft om problemen tegelijk aan te pakken. "In een kleiner team loop je vaker tegen de limieten van je budget aan dan in een groot team. Je kan een lange lijst maken met zaken die de moeite waard zijn, maar daarna moet je kijken welke dingen je qua capaciteit daadwerkelijk kan afleveren. Daar is een besluit voor nodig en dat is onderdeel van de competitie. Je moet de juiste keuzes maken over welke dingen de moeite waard zijn en wat je voor een andere keer laat liggen."

  @Rogier. Of juist wel, dat de nieuwe auto (= grote stap) niet geslaagd is en ze nu “subtiele aanpassingen” nodig hebben om de auto te gaan verbeteren.
  
  @EAM. In ieder geval blijkt steeds weer hoe belangrijk geld voor Williams is op dit moment. Dat geldt uiteraard ook voor andere teams maar bij Williams is het nu een extra groot issue.

Het is niet mijn stijl om een revolutie te starten...nee je gaat nog verder naar achteren op de grid Paddy...Goed bezig jongen, lekker centjes opstrijken met achterover leunen terwijl je exact weet hoe die Mercedes in mekaar gezet is.
