Haas F1 legt de lat hoog: "Binnen halve seconde van Ferrari"

Haas F1 Team wil dit jaar een flinke sprong voorwaarts maken. De Amerikaanse renstal begint aan het derde seizoen in de koningsklasse van de autosport. Tijdens het debuutseizoen 2016 verzamelde het team 29 punten en daar kwamen vorig jaar 47 punten bij. Dat hogere puntenaantal leverde overigens geen positieverbetering op; beide keren eindigde Haas F1 Team als achtste in het kampioenschap voor constructeurs.

Het seizoen 2017 liet een bittere smaak achter bij de Amerikaanse renstal. Teameigenaar Gene Haas zei daar al over: "Vorig jaar was een leerjaar voor ons. In ons debuutseizoen was alles nieuw en moesten we alles over het racen in de Formule 1 nog verteren. In ons tweede jaar werden we met onze neus op de feiten gedrukt. We begrepen meer wat we tekort kwamen en het werd steeds duidelijker dat onze auto's niet snel genoeg waren om competitief te zijn. Op sommige circuits waren we snel, op andere banen kwamen we er totaal niet aan te pas. Nu staan we op een kruispunt, wat gaan we doen om onze problemen op te lossen."

Komend seizoen moet het dus beter. Haas F1 Team wil zich optrekken aan motorenpartner Ferrari. Gene Haas: "Het ziet ernaar uit dat iedereen beter wordt. We hebben onze zwakke plekken in kaart gebracht. Teambaas Günther Steiner en ik hebben in Mexico een hartig woordje gesproken over welke richting we op moeten. Het is geen geheim dat we Ferrari-materiaal gebruiken, dus Ferrari is ons mikpunt. We moeten binnen een halve seconde van Ferrari staan om competitief te zijn. Vorig jaar gaven we een seconde tot anderhalve seconde toe op Ferrari. Over het geheel genomen waren we gemiddeld zo'n twee seconden langzamer dan degene op pole position, die achterstand dienen we op zijn minst te halveren."

  0,5 seconde per ronde inlopen op Ferrari is wel degelijk de lat hoog leggen. Als Haas dat realiseert, leveren ze een topprestatie. Met hun minimale ervaring en kleiner budget is voor Ferrari eindigen onder normale omstandigheden onmogelijk.

  @snelrondje Helaas is het tegenwoordig de realiteit dat een klantenteam nooit bij een fabrieksteam in de buurt zal komen (uitgezonderd Renault klanten) maar jammer is dat wel.

Zet Kevin of Romain naast Vettel in de Ferrari en dan komen ze nog een halve seconde tekort. Het gat blijft minimaal 1,5 sec incl coureurs.
