Haas F1 VF-18 vertoont gelijkenissen met Ferrari uit 2017

Haas F1 Team verraste woensdag door onaangekondigd de auto voor het seizoen 2018 te presenteren. De Amerikaanse renstal heeft voor de VF-18 nadrukkelijk naar de Ferrari van vorig jaar gekeken, meldt Motorsport-Total.com. De nieuwe bolide maakt namelijk gebruik van een aantal trucjes die Ferrari in 2017 al op de SF70-H toepaste.

De VF-18 is een doorontwikkeling van de VF-17. Zo is het concept voor de voorvleugel hetzelfde als vorig jaar. De bevestigingspunten van de voorvleugel bij de neus zijn iets veranderd om de luchtstroom naar achteren te verbeteren. Haas F1 Team heeft vooral bij de side-pods een voorbeeld genomen aan Ferrari.

De horizontale vleugel voor de side-pods is iets verder naar voren en iets lager geplaatst. Haas F1 heeft het trucje van Ferrari met betrekking tot de hoek van de side-pods ten opzichte van het chassis gekopieerd. De reglementen schrijven voor dat er een duidelijke V-vorm naar achteren moet zijn en de hoek ten opzichte van de lengteas 75 graden moet zijn. De auto moet optisch een vloeiende overgang naar de achterzijde hebben. Hierdoor ontstaat het agressieve uiterlijk van de wagen.

Aerodynamica experts vinden deze pijlvorm niets, zij hebben liever een rechthoekige opstelling. Het samenspel tussen de schotten en de aanzet met de side-pods is dan veel beter en de luchtstroom kan makkelijker rond de auto worden begeleid.

Wie vorig jaar goed naar de Ferrari keek, zag dat de Scuderia onder de FIA-reglementen probeerde uit te komen. De benadering vanaf de voorkant voldoet aan de reglementen, maar de side-pods staan in een hoek van 90 graden ten opzichte van de lengteas. Door deze truc konden de side-pods van de Ferrari korter zijn. De horizontale vinnen waren verder weg van de side-pods en kunnen daardoor beter functioneren.

Ook de crash-structuur aan de achterkant van de VF-18 vertoont gelijkenissen met hoe Ferrari het vorig jaar invulde. Dit is echter nog maar een eerste uitvoering van de nieuwe bolide. Haas F1 Team zal de wagen tijdens de tests en gedurende het seizoen nog flink onder handen nemen, maar de connectie met partner Ferrari is overduidelijk.

  Omdat dat dus blijkbaar niet de beste oplossing is. Daarbij is het zo dat een neus niet zomaar op elke auto kan omdat er verschillende filosofieën zijn wat betreft aerodynamica.

  Die is gemaakt om de zeer turbulente lucht die de auto opzij moet duwen te kalmeren om zo rustiger onder de auto naar de diffusor te leiden.
  Er zitten lamellen in dat gat waar lucht doorheen kan, omdat de lengtedoorsnede van de monocoque massief moet zijn mag het dus niet zomaar een gat betreffen. Anders was het afgekeurd.
