Renault tevreden over Liberty, Weber vreest 'Mickey Mouse-serie'

De ontwikkeling van de Formule 1 als sport- en marketingplatform gaat volgens Renault de goede kant op. Het Franse team is tevreden met de ingeslagen koers van Liberty en de daarbij horende maatregelen. Aan de andere kant is Willi Weber bang dat de Formule 1 een 'Mickey Mouse-klasse' gaat worden.

De door Liberty gemaakte keuzes in het eerste jaar, zoals het afschaffen van de grid girls, hebben tot zowel positieve als negatieve reacties geleid van zowel fans als teams en coureurs. Renault behoort tot die eerste groep en snapt goed waarom de Amerikanen de huidige koers ingeslagen hebben, zo zegt Renault Sport-president Jerome Stoll tegenover Motorsport-Total.com. "Het is prima. De nieuwe eigenaren hebben verschillende marketinginitiatieven ontwikkeld die de sport laten groeien als merk en die de verbinding met de fans versterkt hebben. Deze zaken zijn ontzettend belangrijk voor een aan de Formule 1 deelnemende autofabrikant die zich richt op de massa."

Voor het eerst sinds 2008 zal Renault ook weer een thuisrace rijden. Destijds was Magny-Cours het toneel van de Franse Grand Prix, dit jaar wordt de race op Paul Ricard verreden. Stoll: "We verheugen ons op de terugkeer van deze race. We hebben het tien jaar lang ontbreken van de Franse Grand Prix als Franse fabrikant ook gemerkt."

Weber niet blij met 'halo' en 'grid kids'

Daar waar Renault tevreden is met de terugkeer van de Franse Grand Prix en de gemaakte keuzes van Liberty, maakt Willi Weber zich juist zorgen over de Formule 1. De Duitser, in het verleden de manager van Michael Schumacher, heeft moeite met een aantal keuzes. "De lelijke 'halo' verpest de auto's. Veiligheid is belangrijk, maar Jean Todt heeft hiermee een fout gemaakt. Het is ook een zonde dat de 'grid girls' er niet meer zijn. Zij leverden altijd de noodzakelijke glamour aan de Formule 1. De nieuwe eigenaren moeten oppassen dat ze de sport niet in een 'Mickey Mouse-serie' veranderen."

  Ik moest wel even gniffelen. Mijn zoontje van 2 is dol op het Clubhuis van Mickey Mouse. Erg leuk, maar ik moet er inderdaad niet aan denken dat de formule 1 die kant op gaat!

Weber heeft helemaal gelijk. F1 moet gewoon een "foute sport"blijven. De pot op met duurzaamheid, politieke correctheid enzovoort. Lekker racen met milieuverpestende auto's, mooie wijven op het circuit, geweldig!
