Mercedes doet filosofie achter nieuwe livery uit de doeken

Mercedes trekt later vandaag het doek van de nieuwe W09, maar een eerste voorproefje heeft het Duitse team alvast gegeven. Op haar website heeft de renstal een foto's geplaatst waarop details van de nieuwe kleurstelling te zien zijn, terwijl een video op Twitter uitleg geeft over de totstandkoming daarvan.

In de video leggen de livery-ontwerpers van Mercedes uit dat de kleurstelling van de W09 grotendeels gebaseerd is op die van de W08 uit 2017, maar toch verandert er wel het een en ander. Op de W08 was er aan de zijkant van de cockpit en op de sidepod een groot vlak te zien in het blauwgroen van titelsponsor Petronas, maar komend seizoen is dat iets anders: vier blauwgroene lijnen zullen de sidepod en de zijkanten van de cockpit sieren. Een van de ontwerpers van Mercedes verklaart daarover: "We hebben de hele graphic gestript naar slechts vier lijnen, die we sterker geaccentueerd hebben. Elke lijn staat voor een kampioenschap dat we gewonnen hebben."

Het programma van Mercedes vandaag is bijzonder druk. Om 11.15 uur zal er een eerste officiële foto van de W09 gepubliceerd worden, waarna Valtteri Bottas de shakedown zal verrichten. Om 13.10 uur volgt de officiële presentatie van de bolide, terwijl Lewis Hamilton om 16.00 uur voor het eerst plaatsneemt in de W09. Tussendoor zal Mercedes op YouTube, Facebook en haar websites livestreams plaatsen van interviews met Bottas, Hamilton en Toto Wolff. Daarnaast presenteert ook rivaal Ferrari vandaag haar bolide voor het seizoen 2018. Dat zal om 15.00 uur gebeuren.

Gek genoeg ben ik meer geïnteresseerd in de Ferrari dan de Mercedes. Komt waarschijnlijk omdat ik verwacht dat Mercedes wel weer een WK-waardige auto gaat neerzetten (iig hebben ze waarschijnlijk weer het motor-voordeel). Ferrari is nog ff de vraag of ze de goede vorm van vorig jaar kunnen doorzetten. Hoop het wel. Over de RB14 ben ik al enthousiast en met Ferrari erbij kunnen we ons misschien wel opmaken voor een legendarisch seizoen.

  turkoois. Houd er ook niet zo van. In de jaren 90 hadden mijn ouders een bankstel (Leolux Scarabee) in die kleur, en toen was het ook al niet mooi!

Mercedes heeft dat klinische, kille en enigszins meedogenloze. Die rol was jarenlang voor McLaren weggelegd.
Niet zo mijn smaak deze livery, maar dat hoeft gelukkig ook niet. Ik kijk ook vooral uit naar de Ferrari, die ik optisch verrassend verwacht te vinden, itt Mercedes.

Mercedes lijkt mij de meest relaxte team. Als je zoveel tijd hebt voor filmpjes en teasers, ik zie het geen ander team doen. Tot nu toe hebben wij alleen maar foto's gezien van nieuwe livery's, waar Mercedes komt met een live stream. het schept ieder geval het idee dat zij alles prima op orde hebben.
