Alfonso Celis Jr. stapt over naar Indy Lights

Alfonso Celis Jr. maakt de overstap naar de Indy Lights nadat de Mexicaan werd bedankt voor zijn diensten als reservecoureur bij Force India. De regels omtrent het inzetten van coureurs in vrijdagtrainingen zijn voor 2018 aangescherpt en dat betekent dat Celis Jr. niet langer in actie mag komen in officiële sessies tijdens een Grand Prix-weekend.

Celis Jr. reed afgelopen seizoen races in de Formule V8, maar die klasse ging na het afgelopen seizoen op de fles. Celis Jr. laat weten dat de Formule 2 geen optie was, maar ziet een overstap naar de Verenigde Staten als logische stap voor het vervolg van zijn loopbaan: "Ik heb niet genoeg licentiepunten om te kunnen racen in de Formule 2 en wilde niet een jaar langs de zijlijn staan. Ik wil graag racen en daarom heb ik gekozen voor de Verenigde Staten. Ik heb samen met mijn management gekeken naar een stoeltje in de IndyCar Series, maar dat bleek niet haalbaar. Ik ben echter nog jong en heb nu alle kansen om mezelf te ontwikkelen."

Celis Jr. heeft een contract getekend met Juncos Racing Team, een topteam in de Indy Lights. De Indy Lights is de opstapklasse voor de IndyCar Series en heeft er onder voor gezorgd dat voormalig Marussia-coureur Max Chilton al enkele jaren rondrijdt in de IndyCar Series.
