Nieuwe Supercars-baas hoopt op samenwerking met Formule 1 in Azië

Het Supercars-kampioenschap in Australië wil graag uitbreiden richting Azië. Die wens heeft de nieuwe CEO van de serie, Sean Seamer, uitgesproken tijdens de seizoensopener van de Supercars in Adelaide.

De afgelopen seizoenen was het Supercars-kampioenschap al een vaste gast tijdens de Grand Prix van Australië. De vier races die daar ieder jaar verreden werden, telden echter niet mee voor het kampioenschap. In 2018 verandert dat, omdat de klasse nu de officiële titel van support series van de Formule 1 gekregen heeft.

Dat opent ook mogelijkheden om tijdens de Aziatische races in het voorprogramma van de Formule 1 op te treden. Seamer realiseert zich dat terdege en zal in Melbourne een ontmoeting hebben met de topmannen van Liberty. "Ik zie Azië als goede optie om een aantal redenen. Voor Australië is de tijdzone ideaal met betrekking tot de digitale en traditionele media. Ook voor de sponsoren en de fabrikanten is het een geweldige kans om hun bereik uit te breiden tot buiten Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland."

"Het moet natuurlijk wel duurzaam zijn: we willen er niet eenmalig racen, maar minimaal voor een periode van drie jaar. Het meest logische is om samen met de Formule 1 te racen, afhankelijk van hoe hun kalender opgebouwd is. Tijdens de Australische Grand Prix zullen we deze gesprekken oppakken met het Formula One Management."
