Geringe verschillen tussen teams 'niet representatief' volgens Sainz

Op een halve eerste testdag wist Carlos Sainz een indrukwekkend aantal ronden te rijden. Na 91 stuks vond hij zijn naam terug op de achtste plaats in de tijdenlijsten: met een 1:21.455 was hij een seconde langzamer dan Sebastian Vettel en gaf hij 0,02 seconden toe op teamgenoot Nico Hülkenberg.

Sainz kan weinig waarde hechten aan de gereden rondetijden van dinsdag op het Circuit de Catalunya. Daarvoor fluctueerden de omstandigheden teveel. Daardoor vindt de Spanjaard dat de geringe afstanden binnen het veld (alle teams binnen 1,5 seconden) weinig zeggen. "De snelheid van de auto's tegenwoordig kan ongeveer zes seconden fluctueren, dus het zegt niets dat we allemaal zo dicht op elkaar zitten. Elke auto kan drie seconden sneller of drie seconden langzamer gaan en ook de baan evolueert gedurende de dag, dus dit is niet realistisch."

"In de middag vond ik het circuit erg lastig. Als de wind ging liggen werd het beter, maar het kon ook plotseling heel slecht worden. Je snelste ronde zegt dus niet zoveel. De beste drie teams van vorig jaar zien er weer goed uit en ik denk niet dat dat veel gaat veranderen. De rest moeten we nog zien. Het middenveld zat extreem dicht op elkaar vorig jaar, dus het wordt interessant om te zien wie het beste werk afgeleverd heeft deze winter."

"Er is op elk vlak ruimte voor verbetering. Vorige week heb ik al gezegd dat er ruime marges voor verbetering van de setup zijn. Ik maak me dus geen zorgen. Vandaag draaide het er meer om dat we afstand goedmaakten en niet zozeer om testen. Hopelijk kunnen we de komende dagen wat meer zoeken naar de richting die we op willen gaan."

Ben ik met Sainz eens. Een betere schatting van de echte krachtsverhoudingen krijg je door aan het eind van de testperiode te kijken naar het gemiddelde van alle gereden ronden.

Toch is mijn eerste indruk dat Renault het best redelijk voor elkaar heeft. Nog niet op RB niveau maar ik denk dat ze het McLaren en FI moeilijk gaan maken.
