Hülkenberg: "Renault heeft zwaktes aangepakt deze winter"

Renault heeft deze winter goed werk afgeleverd. De RS18 is op alle fronten beter dan de RS17, zo concludeerde Nico Hülkenberg na de opening van de tweede wintertest in Barcelona.

Volgens sommige analyses zou Renault in 2018 in staat moeten zijn om zich achter Ferrari, Mercedes en Red Bull te nestelen als vierde team in de Formule 1. Hülkenberg lijkt daarin te geloven, maar wil in zijn bewoordingen niet te ver gaan. "Ik zou ons niet een outsider voor de titel noemen, maar we hebben ons huiswerk gedaan en onze zwaktes aangepakt. Ik heb nu meer snelheid, grip en rijbaarheid vanuit de motor, dus vrijwel alles is beter. We zijn ons pakket aan het perfectioneren en zullen goed voorbereid aan de start staan.", zo vertelde de Duitser aan Kölner Express.

Interessante uitlaat en achtervleugel

De achterzijde van de RS18 heeft enkele wenkbrauwen doen optrekken. De uitlaat van de Renault is op het hoogst mogelijke punt gemonteerd en onder de maximale hoek van vijf graden omhoog gericht, zodat de uitlaatgassen richting de achtervleugel gaan. De onderzijde van de achtervleugel is dan ook van hittewerende laag voorzien.

Voor de laatste dagen van de wintertest wordt een nieuw aerodynamisch pakket verwacht bij de Franse renstal. Daarmee moet de vierde plaats bij de constructeurs veiliggesteld worden. Aan Auto Motor und Sport verklaarde technisch directeur Bob Bell: "We moeten laten zien dat we eenvoudig bij de beste vier teams kunnen zitten. Alleen dan blijft het hoofdkantoor cheques uitschrijven voor het verbeteren van de auto."
