Eigen fabrieksteam niet aan de orde voor Aston Martin

Aston Martin heeft geen enkele ambitie om een eigen Formule 1-team te beginnen. De Britse autofabrikant fungeert komend seizoen als titelsponsor van Red Bull Racing en heeft interesse om in 2021 als motorleverancier toe te treden tot de koningsklasse van de autosport, maar een eigen fabrieksteam is niet aan de orde.

Motorsport-Total.com citeert Simon Sproule, marketingdirecteur bij Aston Martin: "We weten waar wij goed in zijn en we zien ook wat we eventueel beter aan Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner en Red Bull-motorsportadviseur Helmut Marko kunnen overlaten." Met andere woorden, Aston Martin wil wel motoren leveren, maar Red Bull moet zich over de auto en het team ontfermen.

Sproule vervolgt: "Met alle respect, maar wij zullen nooit het commando voeren. We hebben ook nog een automerk om te runnen. Wat betreft de ontwikkeling van technologie die we kunnen vertalen naar de openbare weg benaderen we het hetzelfde als bijvoorbeeld Ferrari en McLaren. Vanuit een commercieel oogpunt hebben we 130 mensen in de fabriek van Red Bull Racing; ontwerpers, engineers, marketingmensen, enzovoorts."

Een samenwerking met Mercedes, dat vijf procent van de aandelen in Aston Martin beheert, is onwaarschijnlijk. Ondanks het geflirt met de Formule 1 kan Sproule nog geen toezeggingen doen over een Formule 1-project voor 2021. "De klok tikt. Op dit moment kunnen we niet meer doen dan we al doen. Het wachten is op een definitief besluit over de reglementen voor na 2020."

Waarom geen fabrieksteam voor Aston Martin? Als men een budgetplafond instelt van, laten we zeggen, $ 25 mln. zie ik voor Aston Martin toch echt wel kansen liggen. Fingers crossed. ;-)

  Hahahah 25 miljoen, wat denk je zelf. Mercedes schijnt nu al 50 miljoen per jaar in de motoren te stoppen. Dus met 25 miljoen kan je precies niets in de formule 1.

Aldus Telegraaf. Dit laat ook meteen zien waarom Aston Martin nooit een F1 team gaat leiden, veel te weinig resources.

  Je hebt een sterk punt oxygen. Maar in de succesvolle Renault periode van Red Bull stopte Red Bull op het (commerciële) hoogtepunt zelf maar iets van € 15 mln. in het team zelf. Vooralsnog zie ik het niet gebeuren, maar Red Bull heeft bewezen dat het zou kunnen.

  Ja, maar die resources gaat niet perse over het financiële. Die zouden ze evt. extern kunnen aantrekken waarbij ze het alliantie zouden runnen. Het gaat vooral om de infrastructuur. AM kan niet eens al hun auto's voorzien van motoren die ze zelf maken. Waar moeten ze de bronnen vandaan halen om een infrastructuur neer te zetten waarbinnen een chassis, basis, PU en overige zaken ontwikkeld worden.
  
  Het is ook wel interessant waarom ze dit blijven vragen. Weten journalisten dit soort dingen echt niet en blijven ze het vragen bij ieder interview waarbij ze toevallig een AM-functionaris spreken? Ik bedoel, ik neem aan dat ze deze mensen niet opgezocht hebben. Er zijn veel grotere merken waarvoor het logischer zou zijn. Heck, eigenlijk zou ieder mainstream-merk logischer zijn dan AM, inclusief een klein merk als bijv. Mazda (al hebben die iets tegen hybride's en turbo's, dus misschien weer niet zo logisch).
