Marktwaakhond ondervroeg Liberty over link met Syrië

Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media heeft in augustus van het afgelopen jaar pittige vragen van marktwaakhond Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) over de uitzendrechten voor landen als Syrië en Soedan moeten beantwoorden. Dat schrijft Christian Sylt namens Forbes. Liberty Media nam de Formule 1 begin vorig jaar over en het Amerikaanse mediabedrijf heeft zich nu in eigen land moeten verantwoorden voor de uitzendrechten van beIN Sports voor Syrië en Soedan.

Financieel directeur Mark Carleton ontving op 8 augustus 2017 een brief van de SEC waarin stond: "Syrië en Soedan zijn door het ministerie voor Buitenlandse Zaken bestempeld als landen met een totalitair regime en in die hoedanigheid onderworpen aan economische sancties en exportcontroles. We vragen Liberty dan ook met klem om de aard van jullie contact met Syrië en Soedan aan ons duidelijk te maken."

"Jullie moeten alle diensten, informatie, producten en technologie die jullie mogelijk doorgespeeld hebben aan Syrië of Soedan bij ons melden, evenals de overeenkomsten, commerciële afspraken en alle andere contacten die jullie met de overheden van deze landen of entiteiten gehad hebben."

Liberty Media stuurde dezelfde maand nog een reactie terug. "Liberty noch één van haar dochterondernemingen heeft ook maar iets van direct contact gehad met Syrië of Soedan. Elk indirect contact is slechts minimaal geweest en enkel voortgekomen uit de afronding van de overname van de Formule 1."

"Liberty noch de Formule 1 heeft een kantoor gevestigd of lopende zaken, zoals het organiseren van races of evenementen, in Syrië en Soedan. Liberty noch de Formule 1 heeft ooit enige vorm van contact of een akkoord met de overheden van Syrië en Soedan of - voor zover wij weten - met entiteiten die onder het bewind van deze regeringen staan gehad."

Idiote gedoe. De raceliefhebbers daar moeten het gewoon kunnen kijken. Syrie is al in chaos (dankzij door bepaalde landen gesponsorde rebellen/extremisten/tuig).

  Ik denk niet dat er op dit moment mensen in Syrië zijn wiens hoofd naar het nieuwe F1 seizoen staat. Die enkeling daar die de honderdduizenden doden en gemartelden volledig gemist heeft en nog steeds in een denkbeeldig sprookjesland leeft, verdiend het wat mij betreft niet eens om de race te ontvangen!
