Force India ziet af van naamsverandering voor 2018

Het team van Force India heet komend seizoen gewoon Force India, of Sahara Force India F1 Team, zoals de volledige naam officieel luidt. De Indiase renstal heeft maandenlang gezinspeeld op een naamswijziging om de renstal een globalere uitstraling te geven en aantrekkelijker te maken voor sponsors, maar uiteindelijk heeft men geen geschikte oplossing kunnen vinden.

Force India dacht aan een naamswijziging in Force One Racing, maar de leiding van de Formule 1 wilde dat niet omdat de afkorting gelijk zou zijn aan de afkorting voor de Formule 1 zelf; F1. De renstal liet diverse namen registreren, maar een paar dagen voor de eerste Grand Prix van dit jaar wordt duidelijk dat Force India de geplande naamsverandering voor zich uit heeft geschoven naar 2019.

De internationale autosportbond FIA en Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media staan niet toe dat een team de naam gedurende het seizoen aanpast, dus Force India zal nu tot volgend jaar moeten wachten. Volgens Auto Motor und Sport heeft hoofdsponsor BWT wel oren naar een rol van titelsponsor, zodra Force India een teamnaam met een meer internationale uitstraling adopteert.

Er gingen ook geruchten dat energiedrankenfabrikant Rich Energy overwoog om de Indiase renstal over te nemen en haar naam te verbinden aan het team, maar die verhalen bleken uit de lucht gegrepen door de Engelse roddelpers. Rich Energy heeft alleen laten weten dat de Formule 1 voor marktleider Red Bull een perfecte reclamezuil is en dat ze dat zelf ook wel zouden zien zitten, maar nooit hebben ze de naam van Force India in de mond genomen.
