Vettel aan de vooravond van zijn 200ste Grand Prix

Ferrari-rijder Sebastian Vettel behoort na de race van aanstaande zondag in Bahrein tot een select gezelschap, namelijk dat van coureurs met 200 of meer Grand Prix-starts. De teller staat nu op 199 Grands Prix voor de Duitser. Hij is het seizoen 2018 in elk geval voortvarend begonnen met winst in Australië, waardoor hij als leider in de tussenstand afreist naar zijn 200ste Grand Prix.

Vettel debuteerde in 2007 bij het team van BMW Sauber als vervanger van Robert Kubica voor de Grand Prix van de Verenigde Staten op Indianapolis. Hij finishte die race als achtste, destijds goed voor één punt. Later dat seizoen stapte hij in bij Scuderia Toro Rosso, waar de Duitser anderhalf jaar voor zou uitkomen. In de winter van 2008 op 2009 verhuisde hij naar hoofdmacht Red Bull Racing.

Met dat team vierde Vettel zijn grootste successen. Na een tweede plaats in 2009 veroverde hij vanaf 2010 vier keer op een rij de wereldtitel namens Red Bull Racing. Nadat hij in 2014 afgetroefd was door zijn nieuwe teamgenoot Daniel Ricciardo vond de Duitser de tijd rijp voor een nieuw avontuur. Sinds 2015 rijdt hij in dienst van het team van Ferrari.

Races winnen lukt ook bij de Scuderia nog wel, het kampioenschap was de voorbije drie seizoenen echter te hoog gegrepen. Vettel heeft in totaal 48 Grand Prix-overwinningen behaald en beklom maar liefst honderd keer het podium. Hij kwalificeerde zich vijftig maal op pole position, reed 33 keer de snelste raceronde en verzamelde al 2.450 punten.

Vettel heeft zijn 200 Grand Prix weekend al achter de rug maar omdat hij in Bahrain 2016 niet van start ging heeft hij er "maar" 199 gestart. Grappig dat Vettel dan juist in Bahrain die 200 start gaat maken.

goede racer. als hij na RB naar Mercedes had gegaan ipv Ham had hij schumi al uit de boeken gereden.

  Zeker een goede racer. Maar als Hamilton na McLaren naar Ferrari was gegaan hadden zij misschien wel wereldkampioen geweest.
  Gelukkig bestaan 'Als en Had' niet in sport.
  Want 'Als' ik sneller was met mij auto, dan 'Had' ik de kampioen kunnen zijn.. ;)
