De dag dat de legendarische Jim Clark overleed in 1968

Het is vandaag exact 50 jaar geleden dat Jim Clark verongelukte tijdens een Formule 2-race op de Hockenheimring. De Schot wordt alom beschouwd als een van de grootste coureurs die de wereld ooit gezien heeft. Clark reed 72 Grands Prix voor Lotus, triomfeerde 25 maal en won twee keer de wereldtitel, in 1963 en 1965. Op deze dag gedenken we een legendarische coureur die op 7 april 1968 overleed.

    Wat hem, naast de mooie F1 cijfers, zo groot maakt is dat hij zo ongeveer alle klassen waar hij aan meedeed, streed voor de overwinning. Zo won hij de Indy 500 door 190 van de 200 ronden aan de leiding te rijden.

    De beste van zijn tijd, misschien wel de beste allertijden. De cijfers van Hamilton en Schumacher zijn indrukwekkender in absolute zin. Maar dat zegt ook niet alles.

      In mijn persoonlijke top 3 qua coureurs staan 3 namen muurvast: Clark, Nuvolari en Senna. Wie de grootste was blijft onmogelijk om te vergelijken, maar 1 ding weet ik zeker. Senna staart absoluut op plek 3 en niet hoger. En dat zeg ik als groot Senna fan.

    Hij was ook een van mijn helden in die tijd, samen met Carel Godin de Beaufort. Ik was erg onder de indruk toen hij verongelukte.

    Van voor mijn tijd, maar wel een hele grote naam in de autosport! Jammer dat ik zulke legendes niet heb mogen zien rijden

    Ben te jong om hem live te hebben zien rijden, maar met terugwerkende kracht is hij een steeds grotere held geworden, misschien wel de grootste (al hou ik er niet van om coureurs uit verschillende tijdperken met elkaar te vergelijken). Punt is wel dat we het over the years of living dangerously hebben.
    Jim was een echte natural, maar ondanks zijn fantastische prestaties stond hij vrij losjes tegenover racen op zich; zijn hart ging meer uit naar farming.

    Zijn dood bracht een enorme schok te weeg, niet alleen in het land, als ideale schoonzoon, maar vooral ook onder collega's. 'Als je maar geen stomme dingen doet, kun je de dans ontspringen' - dat was dè gedachtekronkel om met de gevaren van het racen om te gaan. Maar dat gold na Jim's dood niet meer. If it can happpen to Jim, it can happen to all of us" aldus Graham Hill.

    Jim Clark! Een echte held uit een tijd dat autoracen nog de gevaarlijkste sport op aarde was en er maar weinigen zeurden om meer veiligheid. Autosport was toen nog maagdelijk puur. Volgens mij had Jim Clark vóór zijn fatale crash nooit eerder een schrammetje opgelopen...het leven van een coureur kon toen in één klap over zijn.

    Overigens: Jim Clark was een erg fotogenieke man, hij had een heerlijke lach en een gepolijste natuurlijke uitstraling. Meisjes en vrouwen vielen als een blok voor hem.

      Nu ik het lees schiet me een voorval te binnen. Het was op de Nürburgring 1962 met de 1000km race. Jim reed met een Lotus 23, een heel licht raceautootje met een 1000cc motortje, tegen Ferrari GTO, Aston Martins en Porsches. Het kwam met bakken naar beneden. Jim nam de leiding maar in de 12e ronde vloog hij er vanaf. Hij had last gekregen van de uitlaatgassen. De auto was een wrak maar Jim had verder niks!
