Renault teleurgesteld door gapend gat naar de top drie

Het team van Renault had gehoopt in deze fase van het seizoen al iets dichter in de buurt van de grote drie Ferrari, Mercedes en Red Bull Racing te zitten. De realiteit is anders; achter de top drie valt qua rondetijden een gapend gat. Renault profileert zich wel steeds vaker als beste van de rest, maar technisch directeur Bob Bell had stiekem op aansluiting bij de drie topteams gerekend.

"We zijn teleurgesteld dat we niet verder naar voren staan", citeert Motorsport-Total.com hem. "Het is ons niet gelukt om het verschil met de top drie te verkleinen. Het gat is misschien zelfs wel gegroeid. We hebben gewoon minder goed werk geleverd dan Ferrari, Mercedes en Red Bull Racing en we zijn minder slim geweest met het ontwerp en de ontwikkeling van de auto. Ik wil het niet als excuus gebruiken, maar je ziet duidelijk dat wij nog minder volwassen zijn als team."

Waar schort het aan bij Renault? Bell kan geen specifieke tekortkomingen benoemen. "Onze zwakke plekken zie je terug bij alle teams. Iedereen heeft last van een nerveuze auto bij het insturen van de bocht, onderstuur in het midden van de bocht en een gebrek aan grip bij de exit van de bocht."

Renault barst van de ambitie voor de toekomst, legt Bell uit. "Renault wil de titel veroveren. Met minder genoegen nemen zou ook niet juist zijn. Renault hoeft niet elk jaar te winnen, dat kan ook niet en dat accepteert Renault. Ze zijn hier niet om te domineren, maar ze willen wel constant in de top drie te vinden zijn en dan van tijd tot tijd een kampioenschap in de wacht slepen. Dat lijkt me een redelijk en realistisch doel."

  Waar het aan schort is onder andere power tekort.
  Daarnaast is hun aerodynamische pakket ook minder dan dat van de top 3 teams. Ook geeft Renault zelf toe dat ze wat foutjes hebben gemaakt (de vertaling van 'minder slim zijn geweest') met het ontwerp en de ontwikkelling.

Wat bezielt Renault en Mclaren om constant te stellen dat ze verwacht hadden met de huidige Top-3 mee te kunnen strijden? Grootheidswaanzin? Snap best dat ze de ambitie hebben maar dat kunstje kost jaren, geen dagen of maanden.

  Ze zitten ook al weer een paar jaar als Renault team in de F1. Toen ze Lotus terug overnamen was het dan ook de planning in 2020 voor de titel te kunnen gaan. Een planning van jaren, dus. Maar nu komt Bell erachter dat ze misschien wel het middenveld kunnen gaan domineren, maar dat de top 3 teams, waarvan er 1 met dezelfde motor, nog steeds buiten bereik zijn. Allemaal heel realistisch dus.

Ik denk dat tegen de top 3 aanschurken wellicht een droom was. De realiteit is dat ze veel sterker uitzien dan vorig jaar. Ze hebben serieus progressie geboekt.

  Maar komt dat door de auto of komt dat door de rijders?
  Met Hulkenberg lijkt hetzelfde te zijn gebeurd als met Ricciardo een paar jaar geleden. Na het vervangen van hun teamgenoot halverwege het seizoen zijn beide coureurs plotseling weer veel sterker gaan rijden. Hulkenberg toen vorig seizoen Palmer vervangen werd door Sainz, Ricciardo toen Kvyatt het veld moest ruimen voor Verstappen.

  Ik denk dat die dingen niet los van elkaar te zien zijn. Als Renault geen progressie had geboekt zou ook Hulkenberg veel moeite hebben gehad om in de buurt van de top 10 te rijden, maar zonder goede coureur is punten halen en doorontwikkelen weer moeilijk.
  
  Feit is dat Force India ver terug gevallen lijkt te zijn, maar dat Haas en McLaren sterker zijn geworden ten opzichte van vorig jaar. Als Renault dit jaar 4e eindigt doen ze het gewoon heel erg netjes.

Gewoon een goede coureur aannemen. Met Sainz en Hulkenberg ga je het niet winnen.

  Zeker na de vervanging van Palmer vorig seizoen denk ik niet dat je het in het huidige stadium van de ontwikkeling van Renault moet zoeken in vervanging van de coureurs. Beide coureurs stellen zich op als teamspelers en zijn bezig met de opbouw van het team, niet met eigenbelang. (Tenminste, zo lijkt het vanaf de buitenkant, kijkende naar interviews e.d.)

  Zelfs in de goede jaren van Renault hadden ze een veel kleiner budget dan de rest van de topteams. Waar Renault in die tijden in uitblonk was het efficient inzetten van hun geld.

  Maar vanaf niks beginnen met een budgetachterstand is nog lastiger dan bijblijven met een lager budget, al won Renault de laatste kampioenschappen natuurlijk ook na een periode van extreme dominantie van Ferrari.
