Hülkenberg: "Ik ben waarschijnlijk beter dan ooit tevoren"

Renault-coureur Nico Hülkenberg is zeer content met het vormpeil dat hij dit seizoen weet te bereiken. De Duitser is zijn teamgenoot Carlos Sainz tot nu toe behoorlijk de baas; 3-0 in het kwalificatieduel en 22-3 qua punten. Hij heeft het gevoel dat hij beter rijdt dan ooit.

Hülkenberg: "Ja, dat denk ik wel. Ik voel vertrouwen en ben tevreden. Deze generatie auto's met meer downforce ligt me beter dan de bolides voorheen deden. Met alle seizoenen die ik inmiddels achter de rug heb en de ervaring die ik heb vergaard, kun je wel stellen dat ik waarschijnlijk beter ben dan ooit tevoren. Dus ik ben blij, al moeten we nooit te vroeg juichen natuurlijk."

Op zijn erelijst ontbreekt echter wel nog steeds een podiumplaats in de Formule 1. Hülkenberg is recordhouder met 138 Grand Prix-starts zonder top drie-notering. "Dat is hoe de sport is, daar mag je niet gefrustreerd door raken. Natuurlijk ben je ongeduldig en had je het graag anders gezien, maar er is niet zoveel dat je eraan kunt doen."

"We moeten ons blijven ontwikkelen en sneller dan de teams om ons heen. Dat is het enige dat wij kunnen doen, werken en de juiste beslissingen proberen te nemen. Kijk naar andere teams zoals Mercedes en Red Bull Racing, zij hebben ook even nodig gehad om de top te bereiken. We moeten Renault tijd gunnen om te groeien, al is een coureur van nature ongeduldig. Ik wil het liefst nu een auto om voor top vijf-klasseringen te vechten, maar zover zijn we nog niet."

Hülkenberg finishte de eerste drie races van 2018 als zevende, zesde en zesde. De 30-jarige Duitser bezet met 22 punten de zevende plaats in de tussenstand.

  Bottas had al 9 podiums voor ze hem in een Mercedes geduwd hebben. Maar idd, ik had ook graag gezien wat Hulkenberg met die Mercedes zou uitgespookt hebben.

EN de nieuwe regels met het gewicht van de coureur gaat hem alleen maar helpen. Nu verliest hij zomaar 2 tienden per ronde door zijn lengte en dus zijn gewicht.

  Nee dat is totale onzin. Het is eerder , Je kan geen actie verwachten van Hulk zowel in aanvallend als verdedigend. Hij kan met deze auto nu eenmaal (nog) niet naar voren kijken.

  Inderdaad leuke coureur maar laat zich wel echt als een kind aan de kant zetten als er een top 3 wagen achter hem zit. Ik weet dat ie dat toch niet gaat winnen maar dan nog kan je ze lekker pas op het rechte stuk laten passeren
