Side-pods oorzaak van de problemen voor Force India

Het team van Force India heeft de oorzaak voor de fundamentele problemen aan de VJM11 achterhaald. De vorm van de side-pods zorgt ervoor dat de luchtstromen dusdanig verstoord worden dat de achterkant van de bolide minder downforce produceert dan op basis van CFD-simulaties en tests in de windtunnel was aangenomen. Force India staat na drie races in 2018 negende met pas één punt.

Technisch directeur Andy Green schetst het probleem tegenover Auto Motor und Sport: "De achterkant van de auto is instabiel bij het insturen van de bochten." Een nieuwe diffuser had in China weinig effect. De nieuwe voorvleugel die in Bahrein zijn debuut had gemaakt is vervolgens ook meteen van de auto gehaald. Green: "Die voorvleugel was ontworpen voor een auto met meer downforce aan de achterkant. Op dit moment kunnen we de pluspunten van de nieuwe voorvleugel niet benutten omdat we de balans van de wagen niet op orde krijgen."

Waar is het misgegaan? De VJM11 is qua concept immers een evolutie van de succesvolle VJM10. Dat maakte het zoeken naar de oorzaak van de problemen wel makkelijker. Green vervolgt: "We zijn alle onderdelen nagelopen om te kijken wat er is veranderd ten opzichte van vorig jaar. Zo zijn we bij de side-pods uitgekomen. Die zijn iets anders qua vorm en vangen iets meer wind dan vorig jaar. Veel is het niet, maar het toont aan hoe dun het koord is waarop we balanceren."

Force India kan de fout pas op zijn vroegst in Spanje corrigeren. "In onze financiële situatie is het niet mogelijk om van de ene op de andere dag te reageren", aldus Green. En zodra de nieuwe side-pods er zijn, kan de Indiase renstal ook verder met de nieuwe voorvleugel en de rest van het aerodynamische pakket. "Als alles goed verloopt, winnen we daar dan in één klap een halve seconde mee, wat we oorspronkelijk al beloofden voor de specificatie voor Melbourne."

In onze financiele situatie...Hebben ze nog wat rekeningen open staan waardoor ze de windtunnel niet mogen horen? Op een budget van 100 miljoen maakt een tonnetje meer of minder toch ook niet uit zou je denken toch. Een paar punten scoren dmv een goede update leverd meer op.
