Renault heeft onvoldoende progressie geboekt volgens Bob Bell

Na drie Grand Prix staat het team van Renault keurig vijfde in het constructeurskampioenschap, met slechts drie punten achterstand op het team van McLaren. Ondanks de betere seizoensstart dan vorig is technisch directeur Bob Bell niet tevreden met de progressie die het team in de winter heeft geboekt met de RS18. Volgens de Brit is het gat naar de traditionele top drie-teams groter geworden, in plaats van kleiner.

Vorig jaar eindigde Renault op de valreep als zesde in het kampioenschap en voor dit jaar werd de lat opnieuw hoger gelegd. Bij de presentatie van de bolide van 2018 sprak de Franse renstal de ambitie uit om het de teams van Mercedes, Ferrari en Red Bull Racing af en toe lastig te maken. In die missie is Renault voorlopig nog niet geslaagd.

"Het is teleurstellend om te zien dat we niet verder naar voren staan. We vechten nu in de kwalificatie om een plekje in de onderkant van de top tien en hadden gehoopt verder naar voren te staan. Het gat met de top drie-teams is bovendien nog groter geworden, dat maakt het nog meer een teleurstelling. We hebben afgelopen winter niet hard genoeg gewerkt om het gat met Red Bull, Ferrari en Mercedes te verkleinen", aldus Bell in gesprek met Autosport.

Ondanks de teleurstelling denkt Bell dat zijn team het nog kan verkleinen, al zal het slimmer moeten worden in het doorontwikkelen van de auto: "Traditioneel gezien wordt het verschil tussen de kop en de andere teams kleiner naarmate het seizoen vordert. Vorig jaar waren we in sommige races bijvoorbeeld sneller dan Ferrari, maar stonden we te ver naar achteren op de grid."

Ze lagen meerdere keren voor op Ferrari, jullie moeten toch beter kijken....iedere keer wanneer ze bijna op een ronde werden gezet lagen ze gewoon voor...

Echt heel kortzichtig om te denken dat je de enige bent die in de winter progressie boekt.
De andere twee zitten ook niet stil.
En dat er een plafond is, is gelul.

Maar ik vind Renault er op zich redelijk bij zitten. Het had erger gekund.

Het wordt in ieder geval steeds duidelijker dat Mercedes en Red Bull een waanzinnig goed chassis hebben gebouwd als je kijkt waar de anderen met dezelfde motor staan. McL en Renault vallen tegen, om over FI en Williams nog maar niet te spreken. Haas doet het goed met de Ferrari.

  AMS berichtte vandaag waarom de Williams wagen zo traag is.
  
  "De schuld is een nieuw koelsysteem dat is gekopieerd van Mercedes, maar nog steeds problemen veroorzaakt. Om warmteontwikkeling te voorkomen, moet het paneel worden geopend. Dat doet de aerodynamica pijn.
  In Bahrein gaven de Williams-technici onder Paddy Lowe nog steeds de indruk alsof ze het mysterie van hun auto een raadsel was. In feite weet het team precies waar het probleem zit. Williams engineering chef Paddy Lowe wilde het koelsysteem van zijn ex-team Mercedes kopiëren en heeft daarbij een fout gemaakt."

Renault heeft een veel lager budget dan de top 3 dus een 4e plek in de constructeurs is het hoogst haalbare. Dit wist men bij Renault al lang dus dit mag geen verassing zijn.

  Ik denk dat de plek ook geen verassing is. Maar Renault heeft het plan om de komende jaren elke keer dichterbij de top te komen. Als het gaat dan groter is, dan ben je teleurgesteld.
