Petronas eerste regionale sponsor van de Formule 1

Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media heeft weer een nieuw initiatief gelanceerd: regionale sponsors. De Maleisische oliemaatschappij Petronas heeft zich als eerste aan dat programma verbonden en exclusieve rechten voor China, Italië en Mexico verworven. De lengte en de exacte details van deze samenwerking zijn niet naar buiten gebracht.

Sean Bratches, commercieel directeur van de Formule 1: "We zijn verguld om onze samenwerking met Petronas uit te breiden om hun merk op innovatieve en opwindende manieren onder de aandacht te brengen en te activeren. Regionale sponsoring is een nieuwe categorie in Formule 1-sponsoring en spitst zich toe op een specifieke markt. Het is een bijwerking van de investeringen die we doen om onze partners meer bij de sport te betrekken en hen betere resultaten te leveren. Petronas zal daarom prominent aanwezig zijn bij de Formule 1-activiteiten in China, Italië en Mexico."

Zahariah Abdul Rahman van Petronas: "Deze overeenkomst onderstreept nogmaals de toewijding van Petronas om de Formule 1 te gebruiken als platform om onze wereldwijde naamsbekendheid te vergroten, met name in de markten waarin we opereren. Deze nieuwe regeling sluit uitstekend aan op onze rol als titelsponsor van het team van Mercedes."

Petronas betrad de Formule 1 in 1995 als sponsor van Sauber. De firma speelde tussen 1999 en 2017 een grote rol bij de jaarlijkse Maleisische Grand Prix op Sepang en de oliemaatschappij is inmiddels al enige jaren als titelsponsor aan Mercedes verbonden.
