Bakoe 2017 heeft Vettel geleerd zijn rust te bewaren

Ferrari-coureur Sebastian Vettel ging twee weken geleden zeer volwassen om met de tik die Red Bull Racing-rijder Max Verstappen aan hem uitdeelde tijdens de Grand Prix van China. Geen gescheld over de boordradio, geen woede na afloop van de race. Vettel accepteerde de excuses van Verstappen en daarmee was wat hem betreft de kous af.

Dat is weleens anders geweest, maar Vettel heeft geleerd om rustig tot tien te tellen en zich te beheersen. Een les van de Grand Prix van Azerbeidzjan van vorig jaar, toen hij achter de safety car opzettelijk tegen concurrent Lewis Hamilton aanreed na een vermeende brake-test. Daarover zegt de Duitser nu in Welt: "Aan die race hield ik een ongekend slecht gevoel over. Ik had echt moeite om het te verwerken. Zo gaat dat soms in het leven. De dingen die je zelf verknoeit doen de meeste pijn."

Vettel lijkt daar inderdaad wat van opgestoken te hebben, getuige zijn ingetogen reactie na de aanrijding met Verstappen in Sjanghai. De viervoudig kampioen schakelde na de touché meteen om, legt hij uit. "Ik was stil in de auto, aangezien ik er alles aan moest doen om de auto op een of andere manier aan de finish te brengen en zo de schade te beperken door nog wat punten te scoren."

De Ferrari-rijder finishte in China nog als achtste. Vettel leidt nog wel in de tussenstand om het kampioenschap, hij heeft negen punten voorsprong op Hamilton.

Het deed mij ook verbazen de reactie van Vettel, ik had verwacht dat hij wel (terecht) woedend zou zijn op Verstappen. maar een zwaluw maakt nog geen zomer!
Dat de SF71H het zo lekker doet zal daarbij ook wel helpen natuurlijk.

Het deed mij ook verbazen de reactie van Vettel, ik had verwacht dat hij wel (terecht) woedend zou zijn op Verstappen. maar een zwaluw maakt nog geen zomer!
Dat de SF71H het zo lekker doet zal daarbij ook wel helpen natuurlijk.

  Dat laatste zal zeker helpen, maar Max heeft meteen duidelijk gemaakt dat hij een inschattingsfout had gemaakt en niets opzettelijk had gedaan.
  Vettel is redelijk genoeg om daar volwassen op te reageren.
  Zo ga je als coureur zijnde met respect voor elkaar om.

  Zo zie je maar weer, ook een viervoudig kampioen leert nog steeds van z'n fouten.
  Hij weet ook wel dat hijzelf niet foutloos is geweest in het verleden, en gedane zaken nemen geen keer. Wellicht heeft hij op het moment wel even een vloekje gegeven, maar hij beseft natuurlijk dat Max dit ook niet opzettelijk heeft gedaan.

  Vettel herkende in Max' actie misschien wel meer dan ooit zichzelf. En dan is het makkelijker mild te zijn.

  Daarnaast zal dit in zijn strijd om het kampioenschap kunnen helpen. Geen vijanden maken, goodwill zaaien. Hamilton heeft het omgekeerde gedaan, dus slimme zet.

Vettel is gewoon goed bezig. Zonder de actie van Verstappen had hij nu 25 punten los gestaan van Hamilton. Het zou mooi zijn als hij komende zondag wint.
