Abiteboul: "Moeite met produceren van auto naar onze verwachting in winter"

Renault lijkt momenteel vaker wel dan niet het vierde team te zijn in de Formule 1, ondanks de vijfde plaats in het kampioenschap voor constructeurs. De Fransen hebben echter een grote achterstand op Ferrari, Red Bull en Mercedes. Volgens teambaas Cyril Abiteboul moet het gat aan het eind van het seizoen nog maar een halve seconde zijn.

Dat lijkt een ambitieus doel, want in de eerste vier kwalificaties van 2018 was de gemiddelde achterstand van Renault op de pole position een kleine 2 seconden. Vorig seizoen was dat verschil aanvankelijk ook ongeveer twee seconden, maar door goede ontwikkeling werd dat gat gedurende het seizoen verkleind naar een seconde. Dat zorgt voor vertrouwen bij Abiteboul. "Vorig jaar hebben we ons sneller ontwikkeld dan alle andere teams, inclusief de topteams", zei de Fransman bij ESPN.

"Dit jaar zijn we op meer dan een seconde achterstand begonnen. Als we ons op dezelfde manier ontwikkelen als vorig jaar, dan is ons doel om binnen een halve seconde van de top te zitten haalbaar. Ik denk dat we het talent, de kunde en de bronnen hebben om dat te bereiken, dus we gaan het zien."

De oorzaak voor de opgelopen achterstand ten opzichte van het einde van vorig seizoen is volgens Abiteboul vrij eenvoudig te vinden. "Ik denk dat we nog steeds moeite hebben om in de winter een auto te bouwen die naar onze verwachting is. Dat heeft een reden, maar ik weet zeker dat in de komende jaren kunnen verbeteren door er meer aan te werken."

  Feit dat bij zowel Renault zelf als RBR veel DNF's zagen einde vorig seizoen maakt wel duidelijk waar ze die progressie haalden (motor stond verder open)... is mss kort door de bocht maar lijkt me gewoon de waarheid! verder is Abiteboul een luller eerste klas, zo zegt hij "we hebben mooite om een wagen naar het verwachtingspatroon te bouwen tijdens de winter" maar blijft super vaag rond de reden ervoor :/ facepalm zeg dan niks imo ..

  Canson Pro, laatste races is het vermogen juist teruggeschroefd omdat er nagenoeg geen reserve onderdalen waren. Althans dat is wat ik me er van herinner.

Ik snap niet zo goed hoe hij aan die getallen komt. Met een seconde op de pole had hij vorig jaar hooguit op een paar tiende van de laatste van de 6 rijders gezeten. Ik kan me dit echt niet herinneren. Naar mijn gevoel was er altijd of in ieder geval meer verschil dan een paar tienden op nummer 6.
