'Investering Latifi creëert verkeerd beeld'

Volgens Nicholas Latifi creëert de investering van zijn vader in Mclaren een verkeerd beeld van de situatie. De Formule 2-coureur is zelf niet verbonden aan de deal, maar hij begrijpt dat mensen de verkeerde indruk kregen toen het nieuws naar buiten kwam.

Vorige week werd bekend dat de McLaren-groep een investering van meer dan 200 miljoen dollar ontvangt van Michael Latifi. Dit nieuws leidde tot de suggestie dat Nicholas Latifi een rol zou krijgen binnen het team, maar volgens McLaren-baas Zak Brown is dit niet het geval.

Latifi junior denkt er het zijne van. "Ik maak me niet druk om de publieke opinie, maar het vormt wel een beeld van mij", aldus de Formule 2-rijder. "Mensen baseren hun mening puur op wat ze zien, maar als ik niet actief zou zijn in de autosport, zou ik hetzelfde denken. De realiteit is anders. Als ik morgen zou stoppen met racen, zou de investering exact hetzelfde zijn."

Volgens Latifi is de investering van zijn vader heel wat anders dan een standaard sponsoring. "Veel mensen realiseren zich niet dat het geen sponsoring is, maar een investering in het bedrijf. Het is niet de bedoeling om geld in het team te pompen om zo een stoeltje voor mij te kopen."

“Het is een investering, waarmee hij iets hoopt te verdienen. Hetzelfde als bij iedere andere investering buiten het racen. Het heeft geen enkele invloed op mijn werk. Er is geen connectie tussen mijn werk als coureur en deze investering."

“Ik wil mijn loopbaan opbouwen door wat ik presteer op het circuit", vervolgt de Canadees zijn verhaal. "Ik denk niet dat ik meer aandacht van teams krijg (door deze investering, red.) dan ik voorheen al deed. Mijn naam gaat al enige tijd rond in de paddock en ik heb al Formule 1-ervaring."

Mocht Latifi in de toekomst op de Formule 1-grid willen staan, dan moet hij dit jaar in de top vijf eindigen van het Formule 2-kampioenschap. Dat lukte hem vorig jaar, waardoor hij dit jaar nog twintig punten moet verzamelen voor zijn superlicentie. Vooralsnog loopt Latifi's seizoen nog niet van een leien dakje. De DAMS-rijder staats slechts tiende in de stand, op 23 punten achterstand van nummer vijf Jack Aitken.

Dat was al lang duidelijk dat het om een investering in het bedrijf ging, maar zo werkt social media: velen hebben dan hun alu hoedjes op en zien allerlei verbanden die er niet zijn.

Ja lijkt me niet gek. Maar denk dat Latifi junior zonder centen van vaderlief de Formule 1 nooit gaat halen.

  Als Latifi junior de formule 1 haalt, dan heeft pa betaald. Als hij de formule 1 niet haalt dan heeft hij gelijk en wordt hij beoordeeld op zijn prestaties. Hij is gewoon niet goed genoeg.
  
  Ik zou het overigens niet gek vinden wanneer hij een keer mag testen in de McLaren. Zijn pa heeft tenslotte toch €200M in die club gestopt.

Ik geloof direct dat als hij bij McLaren komt te rijden dat dit door zijn uitzonderlijke prestaties komt. Heeft niets met geld te maken... echt niet..echt niet...geloof me nou maar... ;)

  de F1 kan een volgende Stroll echt niet gebruiken , want ze gliijden nu al af maar dan nog veel meer, ik heb nog nooit zo'n jankbal gehoord als Stroll afgelopen zondag, wat mij betreft kikken ze hem eruit

  Echt hoor Beerkuh, ook op de board radio roepen 'why bother racing anymore'. Met alle supertalenten/talenten die in de F1 willen geraken hoort die kerel daar echt niet thuis.

  Kijk dat Stroll geen formule 1 materiaal is, dat weten we inmiddels allemaal. Hij zal echt niet bij een topteam op een shortlist komen zoeken ze vervanging voor één van hun coureurs. Maar zo lang pa Stroll de belangen in Williams of een ander formule 1 team heeft, zitten we met hem opgescheept. De komende jaren weten we dus wie de kneus van de formule 1 is.

  Gelukkig heeft de F1 een vrij streng superlicensie beleid, anders zou het afstormen op een supercarchallenge waar mensen met heel veel geld racen in plaats van heel veel talent. Ik ben ook een enorme voorstander van e-sport in racen omdat ik hoop dat talent zonder vermogen uiteindelijk opgepikt worden door fabrikanten.

  Natuurlijk heeft dat daar niks mee te maken.
  Kortweg Latifi heeft in de groep centen gestoken en het team is daar slechts een onderdeel van.
  
  Het zou heel anders zijn als het rechtstreeks in het team was geweest.
  Verbanden kan je altijd maken ookal zijn ze er niet.
  
  Social media werkt niet zo, het zijn mensen die via die kanalen hun ei kwijt willen.
