Haas positief, maar verwacht geen wonderen van updates in Canada

Het team van Haas verwacht geen wonderen van de updates die het team heeft meegebracht voor de Canadese Grand Prix. Dat meldt teambaas Guenther Steiner tegenover Crash.net. Het Amerikaanse team heeft een nieuwe voorvleugel, nieuwe vloer en aangepaste bargeboards meegenomen voor de VF-18. Haas is hoopvol dat alles werkt, maar magie moet men niet verwachten.

“Ik ben altijd voorzichtig met zulke updates, want ik heb nog nooit een auto gezien die halverwege het seizoen ineens magie tevoorschijn tovert", vertelt Steiner. "Onze auto is niet slecht, we moeten alleen bijblijven met de anderen wat betreft ontwikkelingen."

“Het was ons plan om de huidige auto te blijven ontwikkelen en ons tegelijkertijd te focussen op de auto van komend seizoen, maar dat plan is gewijzigd door de reglementswijzigingen. Het is niet eenvoudig meer om ontwikkelingen mee te nemen."

Ondanks de voorzichtige woorden van Steiner, verwacht het team wel vooruitgang in Montreal. "Het is een significante upgrade en we verwachten sneller te zijn, maar we weten het niet exact want we hebben niets om het mee te vergelijken."

Volgens de teambaas hebben de nieuwe onderdelen nogal wat consequenties voor de rest van het seizoen. Gaan we sneller, dan ligt het aan de upgrade. Als we langzamer gaan, ligt het ook daaraan. We kunnen de auto niet meer ombouwen, het is wat het is. De oude vloer kunnen we niet meer gebruiken."

“Vooralsnog hebben de windtunnel en de aerodynamische afdeling geconstateerd dat de onderdelen werken", vervolgt Steiner. "Hopelijk is dat hier ook het geval, maar ik heb geen enkele reden om daaraan te twijfelen."

"Alles wat zij de afgelopen 18 maanden hebben gedaan, klopt ook. Het zijn dezelfde mensen en dezelfde middelen, dus ik ben ervan overtuigd dat wat we gezien hebben in de windtunnel ook is wat we op het circuit gaan zien. Het geeft me vertrouwen", besluit de Italiaan.

En toch vind ik Haas een leuk team. Magnussen heeft ballen, en Grosjean kan (kan) af en toe wat leuks laten zien. Ik zou het wel vet vinden als Magnussen of Grosjean na een gekke race een podiumpje zou kunnen pakken.

En toch vind ik Haas een leuk team. Magnussen heeft ballen, en Grosjean kan (kan) af en toe wat leuks laten zien. Ik zou het wel vet vinden als Magnussen of Grosjean na een gekke race een podiumpje zou kunnen pakken.

  ik denk niet dat dit dit jaar gaat gebeuren of het zou geen gekke maar knotsgekke race moeten worden. Ik moet wel eerlijk toegeven dat Magnussen me verrast dit jaar.

  Zeker! Magnussen doet het aardig. Bedoel meer te zeggen; er zijn een aantal nieuwe teams gekomen de afgelopen jaren en die vielen allemaal tegen. Haas is wat dat betreft een leuke positieve verrassing.

  Grosjean is natuurlijk ook wel helemaal kapot gemaakt op dit forum, en dat is eigenlijk onterecht. Dit jaar presteert hij duidelijk ondermaats, maar de man heeft geloof ik wel 10+ podiumfinishes op zijn naam staan en echt mooie dingen laten zien een paar jaar terug. Dus een enorme pannenkoek is het ook niet.
  
  Het probleem met Grosjean is dat de wagen echt 100% moet voldoen aan zijn wensen. Als dat zo is, is het een topcoureur. Is er onbalans in de wagen, dan lijkt het ook gewoon nergens meer naar. En dat maakt hem nu net een middelmatige coureur, maar Magnussen is echt geen haar beter.
  
  Persoonlijk zou ik niet 1 maar 2 nieuwe coureurs bij Haas zien, namelijk Leclerc én Giovinazzi. Ook laatst genoemde heeft echt wel talent in huis, maar zal wat wilde haren moeten verliezen.
  Voor Leclerc ook meteen een leuke opstap voor als hij later naar Ferrari gaat.

Grosjean is helaas wisselvallig. Die man kan inderdaad wat je zegt de sterren van de hemel rijden, maar ook in een moment van verstandsverbijstering de domste dingen uithalen.
